David Nesbitt

Dave Nesbitt

David Nesbitt rode as an apprentice on the Flat and then as a conditional jockey over jumps, based with his father, trainer Steve Nesbitt, during the 1970s and early 1980s.

He rode his first winner under National Hunt rules on Ingham, owned and trained by his father, in the Melton Handicap Hurdle at Newcastle on 13 May 1977. Steve Nesbitt was then training near Ripon but moved to Middleham later that same year.

David rode enough winners for his claim to be reduced from 7lb to 4lb. His last season in the saddle, 1980/81, produced five wins, the last of them on Peter The Butcher, trained by his father, in a Sedgefield novices’ hurdle on 22 May 1981.

Peter The Butcher went on to win four more races the following season, but was ridden twice by Dennis Atkins and twice by Martin Pepper, David Nesbitt having by then hung up his boots.
