George Neillands

George Neillands

George Neillands rode two winners on the Flat at the start of the 20th century, returning after the First World War to add another seven over jumps.

He was apprenticed to George McGregor and had his first success at Bogside when the Duke of Montrose’s four-year-old La Napoule won the Irvine Handicap on April 6, 1902. He had to wait six years for another win, which came at Ayr on July 20, 1908, when another of the Duke’s horses, the five-year-old Simmer-lift, landed the Trial Selling Plate. That was the last year in which he rode on the Flat.

George took out a National Hunt jockey’s licence after the war and made a perfect start by winning on his first ride when, on December 3, 1919, he landed the Cobham Three-Year-Old Hurdle at Lingfield Park on Wynsford, beating two rivals, both of which blundered their chance away during the race. The distance of the race was a mile and a half with six flights of hurdles, a common practice for juvenile hurdle contests in those days. (They were still held over that distance in Ireland in 1960s.)

He had six wins the following year, including three on novice chaser Turning Point. His last win was on John Charles in the Chilham Three-Year-Old Selling Hurdle at Wye on November 10, 1920. Again, this was a mile and a half race over six hurdles.

George continued to take rides until 1922 but rode no more winners.
