Tom Nicholson

1790 - 1875

Tom was born on March 25, 1790, and rode the‭ ‬1819‭ ‬St Leger winner Antonio.‭ ‬He also rode‭ ‬4‭ ‬winners of the Ayr Gold Cup.‭

‬He had four sons none of whom went into racing.

Tom had a dry sense of humour and still weighed less than 7 stone when in his 80's.

He was emphatic that his mount won the 1831 St Leger.

Very little else is known about Tom who,‭ ‬in‭ ‬1846,‭ ‬shared digs at Malton with fellow jockeys John Gray and John Holmes.

He died at Malton on June 13, 1875, aged 85.

His Ayr Gold Cup winners were:‭ ‬Dominie Skelp‭ (‬1827‭)‬,‭ ‬Brunswick‭ (‬1830‭)‬,‭ ‬Gondolier‭ (‬1831‭)‬,‭ ‬Masetto‭ (‬1834‭)
