Brian Leslie Nicholls rode one winner over jumps in a career that started at Wetherby on November 16, 1975, when Whistling Penny finished a creditable third in the Ladbroke Leeds Dragonara Handicap Hurdle. He kept the ride and finished second, beaten two lengths on their last start of the season, back at Wetherby on Whit Monday, May 26.
He finally rode a winner on Easter Monday, April 11, 1977, when Young Thomas, making a belated seasonal reappearance, landed the Raynham Selling Hurdle at Fakenham, beating the favourite Downing Arms by seven lengths. The seven-year-old was having his first start for former jump jockey Mac Turner, having previously been with John Edwards.
Brian did not ride any more winners and had his final mount when Mighty Minstrel finished tenth of 12 starters in the Belmont Opportunity Novices’ Hurdle at Market Rasen on May 28, 1977, just a few weeks after his Fakenham success.
