Tony Kimberley

Alfred Anthony Kimberley, then aged 18, realized the ambition of every apprentice when winning on his first mount, Pinzari, in the Newton Apprentice Plate at Nottingham on Saturday June 3, 1961. Like his young rider, Pinzari, who had cost Mr M Sobell 8,200 guineas as a yearling, was also winning for the first time.

The race, worth £255.12s. 6d, was not without anxiety for Kimberley, as the rider of Apa Macham, who finished second, objected on the grounds of crossing, but this was overruled by the stewards.

At the time, Kimberley, the son of a Notttingham miner, was 16 months into an apprenticeship with Sir Gordon Richards.

Alfred Anthony Kimberley was born in Mansfield on October 24, 1942 and lived at 19, Adastral Close, Newmarket.

Retained principally by J. Hindley, he rode until the late eighties, his last win coming on Keswa 8/1, for Michael Stoute, at Leicester, on Tuesday November 1, 1988.

One of Kimberley's best early wins came on Major R. Macdonald- Buchanan's great old horse Induna when the pair won the Steve Donoghue Apprentice Handicap for Sir Gordon Richards on Monday, August 6, 1962.

George Todd's King's Secret had been in front at the furlong marker and was being challenged by his stable companion, Caught Out. Induna and the 19-year-old Kimberley, swept past them both to win.

He consistently notched up between 30 and 40 winners per season during the mid-1970's and won such races as the Doncaster Cup (Crash Course) and the Cambridgeshire (Sin Timon). He also won a City & Suburban, the Geoffrey Freer Stakes and the Ribblesdale.

His relationship with Hindley was fiery and came to an end during 1983 when the ill-fated Brian Taylor took over.

Tony moved on to Michael Stoute, staying at 33 Selwyn Close, Newmarket, and won the 1984 Northumberland Plate on Karadar for the stable.

His best season, numerically, was 1977 with 39 winners.

Kimberley married Diane Williams on November 28, 1964. She gave him two sons, Darren Anthony and Paul.

As a young man he played football for his local team. He also enjoyed golf and skiing.
