Martin Kinane

Martin Kinane was part of a famous Irish family of jockeys, the best known being Classic-winning Michael Kinane, a cousin of Martin.

Martin served his apprenticeship with former top National Hunt jockey Willie Robinson in his native Ireland. He went on to ride more than 200 winners on the Flat and over jumps, being better known as a jumps jockey.

He scored his biggest victory on Silent Surrender, trained near Marlborough by Peter Jones, in the Tattersalls Mares Novices’ Handicap Chase Final at Aintree’s Grand National meeting on April 3, 1987.

The following year, Martin had his only Grand National ride, again for Peter Jones, on 100/1 shot Brass Change. They were well behind when falling three out.

Martin had a short spell as a trainer, saddling two winners. He died on June 17, 2012, aged 56.
