Russ Kennemore

Russell Kennemore enjoyed a successful 10-year career as a Flat jockey, first as an apprentice to Reg Hollingshead and then as a professional. He rode 160 winners before retiring in 2014.

Having enjoyed his best season in 2010 with 24 winners, he rode 15 in each of the next three campaigns but registered only six in 2014.

The last two years of his career were difficult as rides dried up and he knew he had to make the difficult decision to retire and think about his new career. He rode his last winner on Precision Strike for Richard Guest in a two-mile handicap at Haydock on October 17, 2014. His final ride in Britain was on the Sue Smith-trained Marciano, who finished tenth of twelve in the David Barker Memorial Handicap at Catterick on October 28, 2014.

He then got a job riding work for Godolphin in Dubai and had three rides in the UAE, the last of them on Marhi, finishing eighth of 16 in a six-furlong dirt handicap at Sharjah on December 6, 2014. It was while he was there that he decided enough was enough and relinquished his licence.

At first he wanted to come out of racing altogether but found it hard with no qualifications to find something outside racing. He returned to Britain and started working with young jockeys and work riders at Mark Johnston’s yard as well as working alongside Yogi Breisner as part of the regional training programme and found he really enjoyed making a difference to others’ riding ability.

He is now working as a jockey coach for the BHA, and delivering training within racing yards on behalf of the Northern Racing College.
