John Kenny

Victory on Shemight in the Aske Selling Handicap Hurdle at Catterick Bridge on February 27, 1954, was the sole success that John Kenny had in his career over jumps. The race was for jockeys who had not ridden five winners under National Hunt rules, and among those who finished behind him were Mick Batchelor, Gerry Kelly and Larry Major.

Shemight was trained by George Dickinson at Morpeth, Northumberland and was having her tenth race of the season. John had ridden in her previous six starts, one fourth place having been their best effort, but now the pair overhauled the long-time leader Sacombe Knight, ridden by George Coogan, to win by three-quarters of a length.

The mare had changed ownership before her next start, and John did not manage to score again, although he kept his licence for another year.
