Wayne Knox

1963 - 2019

Jump jockey Wayne David Robert Knox rode from the early 1980s through to the early 1990s. He was based with a number of trainers during his career including Peter Harris, John Edwards, Ian Gibbons, Chris Wildman and Richard Lee.

While there were no major wins, he enjoyed a fair measure of success, although his winning tallies dropped to single figures towards the end.

His five wins in the 1987/88 season included three two-mile chases on Rusty Roc, at Bangor, Taunton and Stratford. The horse was switched to hurdles the following season and Wayne won on him at Warwick and Taunton. The next season, 1989/90, he rode Rusty Roc to win twice more over hurdles, at Ludlow in December and Chepstow in March.

Rusty Roc was very much the salvation of the later years of Wayne’s career. It was thus appropriate that he gave him what was to be the final success of his 10-years in the saddle when winning a Wincanton handicap hurdle on November 22, 1990. He was also the last ride of Wayne’s career, finishing third in a Stratford handicap chase on February 2, 1991.

Wayne Knox died in hospital on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the age of 56.
