Christy Kinane

Christy Kinane was a stalwart Irish National Hunt jockey of the 1950s and 1960s. A member of a famous Irish racing family, he was the uncle of top Flat jockey Mick Kinane.


Christy’s most notable highlights as a jockey included winning the 1960 Powers Gold Cup on Owen’s Sedge – he finished second on Owen’s Sedge in the 1961 National Hunt Handicap Chase at Cheltenham – and dead-heating on Newgrove in the 1961 Galway Hurdle. He also won the 1960 Munster National on future Grand National winner Kilmore, the 1964 Kerry National on Well Packed, and the valuable Downshire Handicap Hurdle on Hunch at the 1965 Punchestown festival.


He won five chases on the tearaway Out And About, at Mallow, Limerick Junction, Naas, Clonmel and, most importantly, the Glencullen Handicap Chase (below) at Leopardstown in January 1963, the horse’s last start before joining Ryan Price and making most of the running in that year’s Grand National until falling at the fourth last fence.

1959: New Year’s Day Hurdle (Baldoyle) aboard Go On; Paget Cup (Tralee) on Musty.


1960: Celbridge Handicap Chase (Naas) on Whispering Breeze; Yeats County Handicap Chase (Sligo) on Willie’s Cottage; Mr What Perpetual Challenge Cup Chase (Tuam) on Happy Stranger; Bunbrosna Handicap Chase (Mullingar) on Owen’s Sedge.


1961: Rathluirc Cup Chase (Mullingar) on Balnagan.


1962: Joe Cooney Memorial Challenge Cup Chase (Kilbeggan) on Happy Stranger; Independent Cup (Leopardstown) on Sutton Mail; Arthur Blennerhassett Memorial Chase (Tralee) on Newgrove.


1963: Co. Cork Handicap Hurdle (Mallow) on Belle Artiste; Lough Conn Handicap Chase (Ballinrobe) on Happy Stranger.


Having turned to training, he saddled Aintree winners Cooch Behar and Multiple in 1977, before Multiple followed up at the track 12 months later, and Raleighstown. He also trained Bregawn before the subsequent Gold Cup winner joined Michael Dickinson.


Christy Kinane died suddenly aged 72 on November 15. 2007 and was buried in Cashel, County Tipperary three days later. He was survived by his wife Mona, son Christy, and daughter Annette.
