Arthur Kershaw rode over jumps for five seasons in the 1970s but registered only two wins.
Associated with the stable of Guy Bach at Fakenham, his first ride did not go well, as Lintrist was brought down at the third flight in the Tower Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1) at Wolverhampton on October 21, 1971.
It was to be just over a year before his first success when Super Phoenix ran on strongly to beast Indamarti by four lengths and take the Holton Selling Novices’ Hurdle at Market Rasen on October 27, 1972. It was Arthur’s second ride on the six-year-old, and just four days later they won again when withstanding the challenge of Bill Smith on Montreaux Boy in the Barsby Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2) at Leicester.
He had two more starts on Super Phoenix, finishing third once, but no further success despite continuing until February 19, 1976, when Larks Pool finished tailed off in the Staple Fitzpaine Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1, Part 1), part of a marathon 11-race card at Taunton.
