Joseph Marey Kelly rode one winner over jumps when Scottish Laddie just held on to beat Highland Robber, the mount of Sid Francis, by a short head at the end of the Novices’ Chase at Hereford on March 11, 1950.
Trained by Fred Rimell, the six-year-old was making his debut over fences, having won a hurdle race earlier in the season when partnered by stable jockey Tim Vinall.
Joe was riding Scottish Laddie for the first time. They had one more outing together, which resulted in a first fence fall in the Swanage Novices’ Chase at Taunton on March 16, the first of four successive races that season in which Scottish Laddie failed to finish when partnered by various jockeys.
Those appear to have been the only two rides Joe Kelly had that season. He kept his licence for one more season, 1950/51, but had no further success.
