David Kinsella

David Kinsella was born in Dublin on September 3, 1980. He graduated from the Irish apprentice school RACE (Racing Academy & Centre of Education) in 1997. He came to England and became apprenticed to Eric Wheeler, who trained at Combe Park Stables, Whitchurch on Thames, Pangbourne, Oxfordshire.

David rode his first winner on Dark Menace in a Lingfield Park seller on December 8, 1999. He was in demand during 2000, when his victories included a 1m 2f apprentices’ handicap at Epsom aboard Jamie Poulton’s Sammy’s Shuffle in July, and the Jack Colling Polar Jest Apprentices’ Handicap at Newbury in August on Absolute Fantasy.

He enjoyed a good season in 2001 and was lucky to escape from a terrifying car crash in June that year en-route to Thirsk when he skidded on a greasy road and overturned the car three times, writing it off. David was unhurt and soon back in the winner’s enclosure, riding Absolute Fantasy to victory on July 7 in the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry Handicap at Haydock.

David recorded scores of 30 in 2002 and 31 in 2003, riding out his claim in October when he reached 95 winners. However, he endured a difficult start to 2004, failing to add to his tally in 52 mounts.

Lack of success, combined with girlfriend trouble, left him depressed. His career then hit the buffers when he was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon (a knife) outside a Newmarket nightclub on April 11, 2004.

After spending four hours at the town’s police station, he was released with a caution but almost immediately went back to his native Ireland where, despite the efforts of Lambourn trainer Pat Murphy and his agent, Ian Wardle, he remained. He eventually returned to riding but was unable to emulate his previous level of success, notching scores of seven in 2005, five in 2006, and mini-revival of 14 in 2007.

He rode his final winner on Aborigine, trained by John Gosden, in a 1m 2f Class 4 handicap at Great Leighs (now called Chelmsford City) on September 3, 2008. He had his last ride in Britain on Costa Lotta for Ed Dunlop in a six-furlong Newbury nursery on September 20, 2008, finishing 15th of 16.

David then went to ride in Australia for a year, having his last ride there on Defrock, who finished tenth in a 6f maiden handicap at Kembla Grange, New South Wales, on December 19, 2009.
