Pelican Parade

In Southeastern Oregon we know it's really spring when huge flocks of white Pelicans arrive and are seen flying and swimming in unison. This quilt was inspired by the pelicans that can be seen when looking toward Mt. Shasta and the Lower Klamath Bird Refuge. The sky was painted overall and strips of painted fabric were added to it. The water was created with layers of purchased fabrics . The border was constructed to match the body and was added after the flange was sewn on. The 11 flying and 17 swimming pelicans were constructed one feather at a time.
