Shamsullah, born in Afghanistan in 1998, faced persecution due to his Hazara ethnicity and his family's association with NATO. His father disappeared in 2009, and fearing capture by the Taliban, Shamsullah's family sent him on a perilous journey to Indonesia in 2014. After years of detention and self-improvement, he's now a certified UNHCR refugee. Shamsullah dreams of securing a new life in Canada, where he can access basic rights, education, and work opportunities. He seeks the support of five Canadian friends to sponsor his resettlement, hoping to reunite with his family and embrace a life of freedom and fulfillment.

Early Life Incident

Shamsullah was born in January 1998, in Uruzgan province in Afghanistan.

The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education. Shamsullah’s father had a truck and he used to work with NATO Army Forces as a driver. It could not remain hidden from the Taliban and one day in 2009, his father was attacked on the way from Ghazni to Kabul.

“Since that day, we have not heard of my father. The only thing that we found of him was his bike which was burned down on the road.”

The Reason He Left His Home

After that incident, his family fled to the Jaghori district in Ghazni and started living there. Besides going to school, Shamsullah used to work in a car mechanic workshop. Unfortunately, the Taliban found their information in 2014, and they took his brother with them in June 2014. Knowing that Shamsullah was also at risk of being captured and killed by the Taliban, his family decided to send him to a safe place.

His Journey to Indonesia

After Shamsullah arranged for a people smuggler with the help of his family, he flew from Kabul to New Delhi, India in June 2014. From there, he went to Malaysia by plane and then on to Indonesia by boat on June 27, 2014.

Detention Centre

After arriving in Jakarta, he registered himself with the UNHCR on August 4, 2014. With no right to work or way to support himself in Indonesia, he went to Pontianak Immigration Centre to ask for assistance. In November 2014, he was transferred to a detention centre there. While being detained there, he kept himself busy learning English and Indonesian languages.

“Living there was not easy, we were being treated like criminals.”

After about 4 years, Shamsullah received his freedom, and was transferred to a community house in Tanjung Pinang in late 2017. Since then, he has been living there.

It is Possible!

As a refugee, Shamsullah cannot get proper education, work, drive and travel to another city. He hopes to resettle in a country where he can have access to his basic human rights and pursue his dreams which are to get a proper education, work and support his family who are left in Afghanistan.

It is possible! Since Shamsullah is officially certified as a refugee by the UNHCR – unlike the vast majority of the world’s refugees – he qualifies for Canada’s private sponsorship program. Another good thing about him is that he is FULLY FUNDED.
