Noor and his brother were arrested by the Taliban. While trying to escape from there, his brother was shot and Noor fled to Indonesia by boat.
He spent more than 3 years inside a detention centre. Despite living in limbo, he has been working on his YouTube channel. His hope now is to find a group of Canadian friends who can help him start his life again in Canada.
Early Life
Noor Mohammad was born in January 1989, in Jaghori district in Ghazni province in Afghanistan.
The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres due to their culture, religion, and love for education. Noor was a school student when the Taliban took power in Afghanistan and changed four subjects into religious books. Then, Noor Mohammad left school and started working in agriculture on his father’s land which was in Ghazni. In June 2013, he got married and he was happy with his life.
Abducted
In 2014, everything changed when the Taliban overtook Noor’s land in Ghazni. After Noor and his brother were threatened by the Taliban and told not to come back to the land, they both decided to return home to Jaghori. On their way, Noor and his brother were stopped by the Taliban in Dasht-e-Qarabagh. The Taliban accused them of taking back their land by using government force which was not true.
“The Taliban beat us and put us in a car on which we were taken to an unknown place and put inside a room.”
They knew that they would be killed by the Taliban at any time, so they decided to escape from there. During the night prayer, Noor and his brother broke the lock of the room’s door and got out of the room. While running, they heard the Taliban’s shouting and suddenly Noor heard a gunshot. It was very dark and Noor was not able to look for his brother. He kept running until he reached a road and he went to Kabul by car. From there, he contacted his family.
“My father told me that the Taliban had killed my brother. It was a very big shock in my life.”
The Journey
Noor’s family convinced him to leave Afghanistan immediately to save his life. After his uncle arranged for a people smuggler, he flew from Kabul to New Delhi, India on January 30, 2014. From there, he went to Malaysia by plane and then on to Indonesia by boat on March 21, 2014.
Detention Centre
After arriving in Jakarta, Noor registered himself with the UNHCR on March 24, 2014. Due to not having the right to work or way to support himself in Indonesia, Noor went to Tanjung pinang Immigration Centre to ask for assistance. On July 3, 2014, he was transferred to a detention centre there.
“The detention centre was overcrowded and we were being treated like prisoners.”
Noor spent his time studying English and doing exercises. On November 7, 2017, he was freed from there and was transferred to a community house in Batam. He has been learning English and working as a sports reporter on his YouTube channel which is in the Persian language.
Last Word
Noor has a wife and a daughter left in Afghanistan. His wife used to work and study. Since the Taliban has taken over Afghanistan, women in Afghanistan are not allowed to study, work, or even go outside alone. Noor’s wife is alone there and she is not safe under the Taliban’s government.
“I am helpless and I cannot do anything for my wife and daughter.”
It is possible. Since Noor is officially certified as a refugee by the UNHCR – unlike the vast majority of the world’s refugees – he qualifies for Canada’s private sponsorship program, another good thing about Noor is that he is FULLY FUNDED.
