Ali Ahmad and his father were arrested by the Taliban. His father sacrificed his life helping Ali Ahmad escape from there, and he fled to Indonesia by boat in 2014.

He spent 3 and a half years inside a detention centre, and as a refugee, he has been deprived of his basic human rights. His only hope is to find a group of five Canadian friends who can help him start his life again in Canada.

Abducted

Ali Ahmad was born in 1992 in Malistan district in Ghazni province in Afghanistan. He could not continue his study after grade 8, because his father was too old and he had to help his father deliver goods on their truck to the village.

The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education. On October 31, 2014, Ali Ahmad was in Ghazni with his father, and they both loaded their truck with books for the institution and cement for a signal tower. That afternoon, they had traveled one hour towards Malistan when some armed members of the Taliban whose faces were covered stopped their truck. After searching the truck, they asked Ali Ahmad’s father the reason for helping the institution and signal tower by delivering their materials. His father said that it was the only way for him to support his family. Then, the Taliban took Ali Ahmad and his father to different unknown places and then put them in a room. They kept asking his father the same question. Later on, members of the Taliban told Ali Ahmad’s father that their leader would come and investigate him.

“It was getting dark. My father told me that someone had reported the Taliban about us, and we had to escape from there to save our life.”

Escaped Alone

Since his father was too old to run away from there, he convinced Ali Ahmad to escape from there through a small hole from which only one guy could go through. Ali Ahmad climbed on his father’s shoulder and got out of the room through that small hole. After running for about 45 minutes, he reached a road where he stopped a Hazara driver.

“I shared everything with the Hazara guy with flowing tears, and he drove me to Sadaqat Hotel which was on the way to Ghazni”

Ali Ahmad then went to Malistan and told his uncle everything. Three days later, his father’s dead body was found beside the road. Ali Ahmad’s uncle told him that the Taliban had recognized Ali Ahmad and they could easily capture and kill him as well, so he had to leave Afghanistan.

The Way to Indonesia

After his uncle took him to Kabul and arranged for a people smuggler, he flew to New Delhi, India on November 11, 2014 where he stayed for 7 days. On November 18, he flew to Malaysia, and then he went to Bandar Lampung, Indonesia by boat on November 23, 2014. Later on, the immigration police took him to a detention centre in Pontianak on December 19, 2014, where he was registered with the UNHCR on January 9, 2015.

Life in Indonesia

While living there, he kept himself busy learning the English language. Also, he regularly played volleyball and football to stay healthy. After 3 and a half years, he received his freedom from the detention centre and was transferred to a community house in Batam on June 25, 2018. Since then, he has been living there and has been playing football and volleyball to stay healthy.

“I was hoping to be resettled soon, but unfortunately, I am still suffering from uncertainty.”

Last Word

Since the Taliban have taken over Afghanistan, Ali Ahmad has been very worried for his family who are left there in danger, and he cannot do anything for them.

He dreams to resettle in a safe country like Canada where he can reunite with his family one day.
