Mustafa grew up in Pakistan as a stateless person. His life came in real danger after the number of attacks on the Hazara people increased. He then fled to Indonesia in search of a safe country.

Since then, he has been living without his basic human rights. His dream is to be a painter in the future, and he now hopes to find a group of five Canadian friends who can bring him to Canada where he can work, get proper education and pursue his dream.

Early Life

Mustafa Ahmadi was born in January 2001, in the Jaghori district in Ghazni province in Afghanistan. He was a child when his family fled to Quetta, Pakistan because of the threat from the Taliban. Due to not having legal status to stay in the country, Mustafa could only study until 4th grade. He then started working as a cobbler to support his family.

The Hazara people in Pakistan have been targets of persecution and massacres due to their religious and political beliefs. Since the number of attacks on the Hazara people were increasing, it was not safe for Mustafa to continue cobbling shoes in the marketplace of Quetta.

“Every day, we used to hear the news of our people being targeted by the terrorist group.”

The Blast

On February 16, 2013, a massive bomb blast took place in Kirani Road, Hazara Town which killed more than a hundred Hazara innocents and injured more than 200. Mustafa was only two streets away from the blast site.

The Journey

As a Hazara, Mustafa’s life was in grave danger, so his maternal uncle offered to help him go to a safe place. His uncle then arranged for a people smuggler, and in October 2016, the people smuggler brought him to Indonesia by plane.

Life in Indonesia

In October 2016, he registered himself with the UNHCR in Jakarta. Since he was under the age of 18, he was transferred to a shelter where he was kept for about two years. In late 2018, he moved to Jakarta. Since then, he has been living there.

As a refugee, Mustafa cannot get proper education, work, drive and travel to another city. He has been keeping himself busy improving his English skills. He says:

“I am looking for a way to resettle in a safe country where I can work, support my family and pursue my dream which is to be a painter in the future.”
