Imagine your daughter growing up indoors – never being allowed to ride a bike, play tag with friends, or go to school. Florence and Annie, as young girls in Afghanistan, live this way. Their mom, Jessica, can’t leave the home without a male escort. She can’t work to support her family. Her husband, Moh, had to flee to Indonesia in 2014 to escape being murdered by the Taliban. Jessica has no male escort, even if she needed one. If Jessica gets ill, there is no one to help her or the girls.
The good news is that Moh, Jessica, Florence and Annie are eligible for the private sponsorship program in Canada. Five Canadian friends can help them to freedom in Canada. Florence and Annie can ride bikes in Canada – they can go to school – with your help.
The Incident
Moh and Jessica were living in the Jaghori district in Ghazni Province. In 1990, they got married. They are both tailors, and they had a shop where they were making cultural clothes for men and women.
The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres due to their culture, religion, and love for education. One day in 2014, Moh went to Kabul to bring some tailoring materials. While coming back, he was intercepted by the Taliban. After searching the materials, the Taliban found a bottle of wine there, and they took Moh to an unknown place.
“I was very scared because I had heard that the Taliban always killed their prisoners.”
Knowing that he would be killed, Moh decided to find a way to escape from there, and luckily, he made it to Kabul one night. In Kabul, he contacted his wife Jessica and told her what had happened. Since he was recognized by the Taliban, he had no way to stay in the country.
The Way
Moh arranged for a people smuggler, and in early August 2014, he flew to New Delhi, India. From there, he went to Malaysia by plane and then on to Indonesia by boat in August 2014.
Life as a Refugee
After arriving in Jakarta, he registered himself with the UNHCR on August 26, 2014. Due to not having the right to work or way to support himself in Indonesia, he went to Makassar Immigration Centre to ask for assistance. In September 2014, he was transferred to a detention centre where he was detained for about 30 months. In April 2017, he received his freedom and was transferred to a community house in Serpong, Banten. Despite living in limbo where Moh cannot get proper education, work, drive or travel to another city, he has been improving his English skills.
Family in Danger
Moh has been very worried for his family, his wife and two daughters who are left in Afghanistan. Under the Taliban’s governance, no woman can go outside without a man, and this has made life more difficult and dangerous for his family.
“I am always in fear of losing my family.”
Their Dreams
Moh and Jessica have a dream which is to live together in a safe country like Canada where they can build a business with their tailoring skills, and they hope to see their daughters getting proper education there.
“I hope some kind Canadian friends will help us start our life in Canada.”
It is Possible!
It is possible! Since Moh is officially certified as a refugee by the UNHCR – unlike the vast majority of the world’s refugees – he and his family qualify for Canada’s private sponsorship program. Another good thing about them is that they are FULLY FUNDED.
