After the Taliban attacked Ali’s home and killed his father, he was their next target, and to save his life, he fled to Indonesia in 2014.

While living without his basic rights, he has been learning English and doing regular exercise. His dream is to resettle in a country where he can get proper education, work and contribute to society. For this, he needs a group of Canadian friends who can sponsor him to Canada.

His Story

Ali Narwaan was born on August 23, 1997, in the Qarabagh district in Ghazni province in Afghanistan.

The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education. In 2014, Ali and his father were assigned by the Voter Registration Department to visit villages and register eligible voters for the Afghan Presidential Election 2014. A few weeks later in February 2014, the Taliban attacked his home and killed his father. Ali was not home that night and he was informed by his sister and told to run away to save his life.

“It was the most tragic and horrible night in my life.”

Ali ran to his uncle’s home and shared everything with him. His uncle, who was a driver, took him to Kabul. Since the Taliban had been looking for Ali too, he was at risk of being captured and killed like his father. He had no way but to flee to a safe country.

Journey

After his uncle arranged for a people smuggler, Ali flew from Kabul to New Delhi, India on February 28, 2014. From there, he went to Malaysia by plane and then on to Indonesia by boat in March 2014.

Life in Indonesia

After arriving in Jakarta, he registered himself with the UNHCR on March 25, 2014. With no right to work or way to support himself in the new country, he went to Tanjung Pinang Immigration Centre to ask for assistance. On August 7, 2015, he was transferred to a detention centre there. The detention centre was overcrowded and badly ventilated. Ali and other refugees faced many challenges like, lack of food, water and proper medical care.

While living there, he kept himself busy learning English and other courses conducted by IOM. About two years later, he got out of the detention centre and moved to Jakarta. Since then, he has been living there.

Last Word!

As a refugee, Ali cannot get proper education, work, drive and even open a bank account. Despite facing such restrictions, he has been giving his time in improving his English skills, creating YouTube videos and exercising. He also practices painting regularly.

Ali can never live with his basic human rights in Indonesia, nor he can return to Afghanistan because of the Taliban’s threat. His only option to live with freedom and pursue his dream is to resettle in a safe country like Canada. He says:

“I am getting tired of this long wait. It has been nine years and everything around me is moving ahead, but my life is stopped for an uncertain time.”

Since Ali is officially certified as a refugee by the UNHCR – unlike the vast majority of the world’s refugees – he qualifies for Canada’s private sponsorship program.
