This story is about a beautiful family, Hussain, his wife Laila and their four children who fled from the Taliban and sought refuge in Indonesia, but since then, they have been deprived of their basic human rights. Hussain and Laila dream to send their children to school and see them educated one day. This can only happen if they resettle in a safe country like Canada. They are looking for a group of five Canadian friends who can bring them to Canada where they can start their life again.

The Incident

Hussain Ali Hussaini was born in January 1973, in Surkhi Parsa district in Parwan province in Afghanistan. He used to do farming on his land for a living. He also had a car and used to work as a taxi driver.

The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres due to their culture, religion, and love for education.

The Afghan Presidential Election was near in September 2019, when two persons named Kazim and Masum rented Hussain’s car for the campaign. Hussain took them to a village where they had a meeting. There was a river near the meeting area, and Hussain went there to do an ablution. Suddenly, he heard gunshots and saw members of the Taliban arresting his passengers and those who were in the meeting.

“I was very scared. I left my car there and ran towards my home.”

About twenty minutes later, he received a phone call from a member of the Taliban who told Hussain that his driving license was found in his car and the Taliban knew his details. They would find him soon through his passengers. After arriving at his home, Hussain took his family and fled to his maternal uncle’s home which was about 1 hour away in another village. They spent the night there. The next day, his brother-in-law called and told him that the Taliban had come to Hussain’s home and they announced in front of the villagers that they would find and kill him.

“To stay alive, I had to find a way to flee the country with my family.”

Their Journey

After staying hidden at his uncle’s home for 4 nights, his uncle rented a car and sent Hussain and his family to Kabul where they arranged for a people smuggler with the help of his uncle. They spent about 16 days at the people smuggler’s home until their travel documents were arranged by the people smuggler. Then on October 10, 2019, they flew to New Delhi, India. From there, they went to Malaysia by plane and then on to Indonesia in October 2019.

Life in Indonesia

After arriving in Jakarta, they registered with the UNHCR on November 14, 2019 and stayed in Jakarta for 8 months. Later on, they moved to Cisarua, Bogor. Since then, they have been living there.

Hussain has been living in limbo with his wife, two sons and two daughters. He has been very concerned about his children’s future because as refugees, they cannot get proper education, work, drive and travel to another city. Their life has been stopped and Hussain wants his children to go to school and become helpful hand to society one day.

There is a Way!

There is a way! Since Hussain and his family are officially certified as refugees by the UNHCR – unlike the vast majority of the world’s refugees – they qualify for Canada’s private sponsorship program. Another good thing about this beautiful family is that they are FULLY FUNDED.

If you would like to sponsor them – or if you’re just interested in helping to bring them here – please contact his friend Stephen Watt on Facebook.
