After killing his brother, the Taliban started looking for Sahil as well. Since they had his picture, they could easily find him and kill him. Luckily, he succeeded to flee from Afghanistan to Indonesia by boat saving his life in 2014.

Despite living in limbo in Indonesia where he cannot work, get an education and travel to another city, he has been keeping himself busy learning English and computer skills. His hope now is to find a group of five Canadian friends who can help him start his life again in Canada.

Early Life

Sahil was born on September 22, 1997, in a village in the Malistan district in Ghazni province in Afghanistan. He studied high school at Noor Ghazna High School and achieved his English language certificate from Behzad Institution of Learning which was the IELTS System. In 2013, he started working part-time in his brother’s library in Naw Abad, Ghazni.

The Incident

The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education. On June 11, 2014, Sahil and his brother were in Kabul for buying books for the library. His brother received a phone call from his family telling him to return home soon, and he went back home. The next day, Sahil’s father contacted him and told him not to return to Ghazni. He was told by his father to hide somewhere because the Taliban had killed his brother and they had his picture as well which meant that his life was in danger.

“Hearing that I had lost my brother was very shocking and painful to me.”

Leaving Home

Sahil hid in a hotel in Kabul. He was then given shelter by one of his father’s friends who helped him arrange for a people smuggler as well. On July 15, 2014, Sahil flew to New Delhi, India and stayed there for 9 days. From there, he went to Malaysia by plane and then on to Pekanbaru, Indonesia by boat in July 2014.

“I had no choice to stay in my country so I had to seek a safe place to save my life.”

Life in Indonesia

After arriving in Jakarta, Sahil registered himself with the UNHCR on August 1, 2014, and started living in Bogor with some of his refugee friends. While living there, he went to English and Bahasa classes to improve his language skills, and he regularly played futsal to stay healthy.

About two years later in June 2014, he moved to Jakarta where he kept learning computer, photography, video editing and modelling skills.

Detention Centre

Due to not having the right to work or way to support himself in Indonesia, Sahil went to Pekanbaru Immigration Centre to ask for assistance. He was transferred to a detention centre on February 1, 2018, where he was kept for 8 months. Then on October 11, 2018, he received his freedom and was transferred to a community house in Medan.

Life Now

Since then, Sahil has been attending online courses about business and administration. He also does regular exercises and plays futsal. Unfortunately, as a refugee, Sahil cannot get proper education, work, drive and even open a bank account. Therefore, he has been very worried about his future. He says:

“I hope to find kind and generous friends who can help me come to Canada where I will be able to live like other humans one day.”

It is Possible!

It is possible. Since Sahil is officially certified as a refugee by the UNHCR – unlike the vast majority of the world’s refugees – he qualifies for Canada’s private sponsorship program, another good thing about him is that he is FULLY FUNDED.
