After her husband’s death, she was threatened by her husband’s brothers who wanted to take her 2 children from her. She knew that she was at the risk of being killed in Afghanistan, so she fled with her children to Indonesia in 2016.

As a refugee, she has been facing many difficulties like, she cannot work, drive and live with freedom. Her dream is to educate her children in a safe country where they can have a bright future. She needs a group of five Canadian friends who can help her start her life again.

Early Life

Fatima Hassani was born in Mashhad, Iran in 1992. Her parents were from Afghanistan and they had migrated to Iran. Fatima’s family used to pay yearly for their documents to stay in Iran. She was only 12 years old when her father died, so she left school and started sewing to feed her family. Due to her financial problems, she married an Afghan boy at the age of 17. Her husband did not have legal documents to stay in the country and he used to sell handicrafts. In 2013, Fatima’s mother and sister migrated to Australia, and Fatima lost her legal status to stay in the country. However, her husband one day was arrested by the local police and deported to Afghanistan where he stayed at his brother’s house. Since it was not possible for Fatima living stateless with her 2 children and without her husband, she decided to go to Kabul, Afghanistan after her husband.

After Her Husband

In Kabul, Fatima’s husband found a job as a security guard. After a few months, her husband committed suicide on January 20, 2016.

“Later on, my husband’s brothers came and said that the children belonged to their brother and they wanted to take them. Being an alone woman, I was very scared at the moment.”

The brothers of Fatima’s husband had threatened her saying that they would kill her anywhere and anytime and then would take her children. Fatima knew that she was no longer safe in Afghanistan, so she had to seek a safe country.

Their Journey

With the help of her family from Australia, she arranged for a people smuggler, and on March 12, 2016, she and her two children flew to New Delhi, India. From there, they went to Singapore by plane and then on to Indonesia on March 17, 2016.

Life in Indonesia

After registering herself with the UNHCR, Fatima moved to Cisarua, Bogor. 1 and a half years later, she was recognized as a refugee by the UNHCR.

“I had a little hope that I would be resettled in the third country soon, but nothing has changed yet.”

Fatima came to Indonesia to seek a safe place for herself and her 2 children, but she is not safe there as well. She has changed her home address several times because her husband’s brothers have been threatening her through her relatives. They have told her relatives that they knew her address and they would attack her anytime.

Her Only Option!

Fatima’s only option to live with freedom and raise her children in a safe environment is to resettle in a country like Canada.
