When Ahmed was a child, his family fled to Pakistan to save their lives. He grew up there as a stateless person. Yet, his life was no longer the same after being attacked twice by members of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. After surviving the attack, Ahmed felt the immediate danger he was encountering in Pakistan and fled to Indonesia by boat in 2015.

In Indonesia, Ahmed was deprived of human rights like a decent job or freedom of expression. He is an experienced Computer Sales Representative and hoping to resettle in a safe country where he can work, live and reunite with his family. Canada is Ahmed’s dream destination which he believes is a possible refuge for him and his family. He will be able to secure a job and contribute to society. Ahmed wants to reunite with his mother in Canada who is still in Pakistan and at risk of being detained and deported to Afghanistan.

Ahmed needs a group of five Canadian friends who can help him start his life again in Canada.

Early Life

Ahmed was born in 1992 in Ghazni province in Afghanistan. He belongs to the Hazara ethnic who have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education. He was a child when his family moved to Quetta, Pakistan due to their safety issue.

Life in Pakistan

Ahmed grew up in Pakistan. Due to not having legal status to stay in the country, his father decided to return to Afghanistan and see if it was safe for his family to move back to the country. Unfortunately, his father was killed by the Taliban on the way to their village. Afterward, Ahmed started working to support the family. Besides going to school, he did various works such as carpet weaving, baking and electronic repairing etc. He worked very hard and finally opened his shop for computer sales and services.

Incidents

The situation in Pakistan for the Hazara people were becoming more dangerous gradually. The number of attacks had been increasing.

On February 16, 2013, a massive bomb blast killed more than a hundred and injured more than 200 Hazara innocents in Hazara Town, Quetta. Ahmed’s shop was about 200 meters away from the blast site.

“My shop’s windows and other items were broken. It was a very terrifying day and I witnessed many dead bodies there.”

On June 30, 2013, another suicide bomb blast took place in Hazara town, Quetta that killed about 28 Hazara innocents. This terrible incident was near Ahmed’s shop. Life was getting harder for Ahmed, and he felt unsafe in Pakistan.

Ahmed used to go to the marketplace of Quetta to bring electronic items to his shop. One day in 2013, he was on his way to Bazaar on his bike when members of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi shot him. Fortunately, he was not hurt, but a bullet touched his helmet.

In late 2014, another attack happened that could have affected Ahmed. He heard gunshots and knew that a taxi filled with Hazara passengers was attacked just after he left the incident area.

“After surviving those incidents, I was sure that I would be killed if I stayed in the country, so I decided to flee to a safe place.”

His Journey

Ahmed arranged for a people smuggler, and he flew to Malaysia. From there, he went to Indonesia by boat on June 3, 2015.

After arriving in Jakarta, he registered himself with the UNHCR in June 2015 and started living in Cisarua, Bogor. Since then, he has been living but deprived of his human rights.

His Concern

Ahmed has been very worried for his mother who is left alone in Pakistan. As a son, his dream is to support his mother and reunite with her one day.

“I hope to be helped by kind citizens of Canada to start living with freedom in this beautiful country where I can have access to proper education and a good job.”

It is possible! Since he is officially certified as a refugee by the UNHCR – unlike the vast majority of the world’s refugees – he qualifies for Canada’s private sponsorship program.
