After abducting his father, the Taliban were looking for Enayat to abduct and then kill him. However, he fled to Indonesia to save his life in 2014.

There, he was kept inside a detention centre for years. Now, as a refugee, he cannot continue his life like other people because he has been deprived of his basic human rights. His hope now is to find a group of five Canadian friends who can help him start his life again in Canada.

His Story

Enayat was born in January 1998, a village in the Qarabagh district in Ghazni province in Afghanistan.

The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education. In early 2014, Enayat was campaigning for his father who was a candidate for the provincial council in Ghazni province. As the election was getting close, on February 16, 2014, Enayat’s father was ambushed by the Taliban on the way to Ghazni in a place called Dasht-e-Qarabagh. Enayat was informed by police that his father had been abducted and the Taliban were likely to come after him, so he escaped to his uncle’s house. On the other side, the Taliban attacked Enayat’s home that night.

“They burned my house and threatened my mother to deliver me to them soon.”

His Way to Indonesia

Enayat had no way but to leave Afghanistan to save his life. With the help of his uncle, he went to Kabul hiddenly where he arranged for a people smuggler, and on March 8, 2014, he flew to New Delhi, India. From there, he went to Malaysia by plane on April 14.

“I faced problem to pay the people smuggler’s fee, and he refused to take me out of Malaysia. I waited for nearly 4 months there.”

Detention Centre

On August 15 , 2014, he arrived in Pekanbaru, Indonesia by boat. After arriving in Jakarta, he registered himself with the UNHCR on August 24, 2014. With no right to work or way to support himself in Indonesia, he went to Manado Immigration Centre to ask for assistance, and he slept for a year under the rain and sun. On November 15, 2015, he was transferred to a detention centre in Manado where he finally got access to a roof.

While living there, he used his time learning English and Indonesian language. On September 8, 2016, he was officially recognized as a refugee by the UNHCR. After spending more than 2 years inside the detention centre, Enayat received his freedom and was transferred to a community house in Tanjung Pinang on February 24, 2018.

Dreams

Enayat dreams to resettle in a safe country where he can reunite with his family and contribute to society. He wishes to see the world without any discrimination and insecurity so that humanity could live with peace and brotherhood.
