BAKERY SHOP OWNER

Arif Bahrami

Name: Arif Bahrami, his wife and two sons.

Profile: Hazara refugees from Afghanistan, living in Indonesia.

Advantages: UN-certified, good English skills, driver, FULLY FUNDED.

Risk: At risk of being tortured and killed by the Taliban if returned home.

Canadian contact: Stephen Watt

Needed: A group of five friends to support him.

After his father got killed by the Taliban, Arif was their next target. He had no other way but to flee with his family from Afghanistan to save their life, and in 2016, they fled to Indonesia by boat.

Since then, Arif and his family have been living in limbo where they do not have access to their basic human rights. The only option for them to live with freedom is to resettle in a safe country like Canada. This beautiful family has access to the required funds for their sponsorship. They need now a group of five Canadian friends who can help them start their life again in Canada.

Their family

Arif and his wife were born in the Qarabagh district in Ghazni province of Afghanistan. They got married and blessed with 2 kids, Abdullah 12, and Ehsan 8 years old.

The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education. To support his family, Arif had a bakery shop in the Qarabagh district. In 2015, he started a contract with local police to provide them bread, and this brought them to the target list of the Taliban.

Threatened and Attacked

On January 20, 2016, Arif received a threatening letter written by the Taliban, and 2 weeks later, on the evening of February 4, 2016, Arif was in his friend's shop, when some members of the Taliban attacked his bakery and murdered his father. Then they started looking for Arif. Luckily, he stayed hidden at his friend’s house, and the next morning, he and his family fled to Kabul. In Kabul, his mother contacted him and told him that the Taliban came to their home and asked for him.

“I knew that I was no longer safe in Afghanistan, and I had to find a way to leave my country immediately.”

The way to Indonesia

On February 13, 2016 he and his family flew to New Delhi, India and stayed there for 9 days. On February 22, they flew to Malaysia where they stayed for 5 days, and on February 26, 2016 they arrived in Indonesia by boat.

“We were taken to the seashore by the people smuggler and commanded to enter the small wooden boat which was terrifying for us since we had never been in a boat before.”

His Concern

After arriving in Jakarta, they registered with the UNHCR on February 27, 2016 and moved to Cisarua, Bogor. Since then, they have been living there.

Arif and his family have been living in limbo. He has been very concerned about his children's future because as refugees, they cannot go to school, work, drive and travel to another city. It is not possible for them to live with freedom in Indonesia.

There is a Way!

Since Arif and his family are officially certified as refugees by the UNHCR – unlike the vast majority of the world’s refugees – they qualify for Canada’s private sponsorship program. Another good thing about this beautiful family is that they are FULLY FUNDED.

If you would like to sponsor them – or if you’re just interested in helping to bring them here – please contact his friend Stephen Watt on Facebook.
