After Hameed Ali’s father was killed by the Taliban in Afghanistan, his family fled to Pakistan for their safety when he was only 2 years old. In 2013, Hameed was injured in a tragic suicide bombing that targetted Hazara in Quetta. He was no longer safe in Pakistan. He fled to Indonesia by boat in 2014.

Since 2014, Hameed has been in a terrible limbo. As a refugee in Indonesia, he can't access education, or health care - Hameed has been deprived of his basic rights. Single men have little to no hope of being resettled by the UNHCR. Private sponsorship to Canada is his only hope for freedom. Hameed needs a group of people who can help him to come to Canada where he can have access to proper education, health care and can live with his basic rights.

Robbed of his Father

Hameed Ali was born in 1990 in Afghanistan. The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education. In 1992, his village was attacked and many Hazara innocents were killed. Among the dead was Hameed's father. While only 2 years old, his family escaped to Quetta, Pakistan.

Injured by Suicide Bomb

Hameed grew up in Quetta, Pakistan. As a young man, he worked as a painter. Pakistan was growing less and less safe for the Hazara community and the number of attacks on the Hazara people increased in Quetta. On January 10, 2013, the unthinkable happened - Hameed was caught in a suicide bomb blast. Glass hit his head and chest.

“When I heard the blast, I got so worried because two of my friends were inside the snooker club, so I came back to see my friends.”

After 30 minutes of the first blast, another massive bomb, fixed inside an ambulance exploded which killed 130 people and injured at least 270.

In the second blast, my head and chest were injured. My mother was so worried because she knew I was there, and she tried to contact me but the network was extremely busy at that moment.”

After that incident, Hameed didn’t feel safe there anymore. His caring friends donated some money for him and he arranged for a smuggler to go to Indonesia.

Escaping Pakistan

In February 2014, Hameed flew from Islamabad to Thailand where he eventually made his way to Indonesia by boat and arrived in Jakarta. He registered himself at the UNHCR office on February 24 and started living in Bogor.
