Fariba’s life was in danger in Afghanistan. She and her husband fled to Indonesia in 2016. Later on, her husband turned out to be a drug-addictive who started torturing her and beating her child. As a mother, she had to save her child, so she ran away and she is staying hidden somewhere in Indonesia.

Her life is in danger because her husband has been threatening to kill her and her child. She needs a group of five Canadian friends who can bring her to Canada where she can live peacefully.

Her Story

Fariba was born on April 4, 1995 in Nawur district in Ghazni province in Afghanistan. She was raised in a religious and restrictive family. She could only study until 10th grade at school. Then she was prohibited to continue her education by her family, especially by her uncle who had been a friend of the Taliban. Her uncle was involved in the Taliban’s operations in Ghazni and he made his two daughters marry members of the Taliban. He wanted Fariba to marry a member of the Taliban too.

“My parents did not agree to this marriage proposal, so they were forced to engage me with a boy who was our neighbor.”

Leaving Home

Fariba and her family knew that Fariba’s uncle would kill her and her fiancé if he came to know about their engagement, so they both flew to Kabul where they got married. Their situation was extremely bad in Kabul.

“We were horrified by my uncle and his associates.”

They were still at the risk of being caught by Fariba’s uncle, so they both arranged for a people smuggler and flew to Surabaya, Indonesia via Singapore in October 2016.

“During our escape from Afghanistan, I was in critical condition. I was pregnant and terrified that I might die or lose my child.”

Her Family’s Situation

Upon her arrival in Indonesia, Fariba was told that her uncle had been causing a lot of trouble for her family. He had been torturing her father badly. Also, he had kidnapped Fariba’s younger sister and made her marry a member of the Taliban. Since then, no one has heard about Fariba’s sister.

“We even do not know whether she is alive or dead.”

Fariba’s uncle threatened her father to tell fariba to come back to Afghanistan or else, he would take another sister of Fariba as well. Her Uncle and his associates have issued a religious punishment of stoning her to death.

Since the Taliban has taken over Afghanistan, Fariba’s family has been staying in an unknown location, terrified of her uncle and the Taliban.

“My father is scared that my uncle would find them and take my two sisters as well.”

New Trouble

After arriving in Jakarta, Fariba and her husband registered themselves with the UNHCR and started living in Bogor where she gave birth to her child in a difficult and lonely situation, and there was no one by her side, not even her husband. Fariba and her family had been supported financially by her husband’s brother, and her husband used to spend all the money without buying anything for Fariba and her child. After two years, she realized that her husband was a drug addict and he used pills. Fariba tried to help him stop taking pills but she failed. Whenever her husband was out of money, he used to borrow for his addiction. He also hit Fariba with anything in an insane manner when he did not have money to buy drugs.

“I tolerated him for years but there was no sign of improvement in him.”

Fariba asked for a divorce, but her husband refused and threatened her that he would give her family’s information to her uncle. Also, her husband slapped and abused their son several times.

“I could not take it anymore, so I was compelled to run away with my son.”

Still in Danger

She went to the UNHCR office to ask for protection, but it has been six months and there is no response from the UNHCR. Fariba’s husband contacts her from different numbers and threatens to kill her and her son. She is hidden and constantly searching for a safe place to stay.

“I am terrified that if my husband finds us, God knows what will happen to me and my son.”
