After being threatened by the Taliban several times, Nazir was chased and near to be captured, but he succeeded to escape from the Taliban and fled to Indonesia by boat in 2014 to save his life.

While living in uncertainty, Nazir has been volunteering as an English teacher. Also, his passion has no limit in getting education but as a refugee, he cannot get proper education in Indonesia. He needs a group of friends who can bring him to Canada where he can start his life again.

His Story

Nazir Hussain was born in 1995, in a village in Ghazni province in Afghanistan.

From 2012 to 2014, he worked as an interpreter and project reporter at the operation and maintenance project of the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police. The project was funded by the US government through ITT & CONTRACK INC. Nazir and his colleagues were threatened several times by the Taliban, and one day in September 2014, he was chased by the Taliban, but luckily, he succeeded in escaping from their hands and fled to Kabul where he stayed for 1 month hiddenly.

“I was so fortunate that I escaped or else, I would have been killed by the Taliban.”

Way to Indonesia

After arranging for a people smuggler, Nazir flew to New Delhi, India on November 30, 2014. From there, he went to Malaysia by plane where he and other refugees were locked up in a filthy and cramped house for a week. On December 5, 2014, he arrived in Pekanbaru, Indonesia by a dangerous boat.

Difficult Days in Indonesia

On that same day, Nazir registered himself with the UNHCR in Pekanbaru. Then he went to the immigration office to ask for assistance. On December 19, 2014, he was transferred to a community house in Pekanbaru.

10 days later, Nazir got bitten by Dengue and he nearly died there.

“The new year was coming and everyone was excited to see the fireworks but I was sleeping behind the door and my whole body was burning due to fever and pain.”

From 2015 to 2018, Nazir and other refugees were not allowed to go outside from 8 Pm until 8 AM. He has been living in a tiny room having two beds and a toilet with three other refugees.

His Passion

To live a purposeful life, Nazir started teaching English voluntarily to other refugees, and to expand his English class, he started creating English learning content on YouTube and Facebook.

“I enjoy teaching and I am confident enough now.”

He never quit learning as well. Unfortunately, refugees in Indonesia do not have the right to study at university, but Nazir kept searching for online opportunities and he has been studying business administration online at the University of the People through Kiron Open Higher Education.

“Learning online may not be as helpful as learning on campus, but I think we have to grab every available opportunity we get in life.”

Only Option

Since August 2021, the Taliban have taken over Afghanistan, and Nazir has no option to return to his country nor he can stay in Indonesia because as a refugee, he is not allowed to work, study, drive and travel to another city.

“I usually contact UNHCR Indonesia and ask them to resettle me in a safe country but I get the same answer every time from them which is “Resettlement is not refugees’ right.””

The only option for Nazir is to resettle in a country like Canada where he can work, study, see his family again after a decade and live his life.

As a UNHCR refugee, Nazir is eligible for Canada’s private sponsorship program. He needs a group of five Canadian friends to support him.
