A LOVER TO EDUCATION

Mujtaba Rezai

Like many Hazara refugees, Mujtaba Rezai, a young Hazara refugee and his family fled to Indonesia because they were threatened to death by the Taliban.

In Indonesia, Mujtaba saw refugees who had been waiting for their resettlement since 2012, and he became hopeless. Still, he is doing his best to keep himself motivated by reading books, exercising and studying GED (General Educational Development).

He and his family need five Canadian friends who can help him start his life again.

His Story

Mujtaba Rezai was born on November 1, 2001 in Quetta, Pakistan. His family were living in Quetta as refugees. In 2012, they returned to Afghanistan and Mujtaba started going to school and English Language Centre.

The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education.

Like many Hazaras, Mujtaba and his family couldn’t live peacefully in Afghanistan, and their lives were in thread by the Taliban, so they decided to leave their home country and flee to a safe place.

The Way to Indonesia

Mujtaba arranged for a people smuggler and they flew from Kabul to New Delhi, India. They had transit for 11 hours, and then flew to Malaysia and stayed in the airport for 7 hours. They arrived in Indonesia in November 2017.

His Life in Indonesia

Mujtaba, his mother and younger brother stayed in Bogor where he saw several refugees being so depressed.

“I saw refugees who had been waiting for their resettlement since 2012, and they had already given up. I also became hopeless and tensed about our future.”

While living his life I limbo, Mujtaba keeps himself busy in reading books, doing exercise and playing football. He is studying GED (General Educational Development), where he can get an American high school certificate.

“It's a big opportunity for me to get my high school certificate here.”

His Hopes

Mujtaba hopes to live in a country where he can learn more skills, and help society.

“I want no one to be a refugee in this world, and no one should commit suicide because of their unknown fate.”
