After the Taliban killed Mohammad Reza’s parents at his home, they found his picture and National Identity card, and they started looking for him to kill him too BECAUSE his father was chosen by His village's leader as local army to protect (People, clinics, Schools , masjids, agricultural lands) from Talibans and Kochi groups who support by Talibans. Knowing that he would be killed by the Taliban, he fled to Indonesia by boat in 2014

While living in the detention centre in Indonesia for 40 months, he kept himself busy in learning and exercising. Also, he began volunteering in teaching other refugees. He has only his younger brother left in Afghanistan who is in hiding from the Taliban. He needs a group of friends who can help him come to Canada where he can support his brother and rescue his life.

His Story

Mohammad Reza Abbasi was born on January 1, 1998 in a village in Behsud district in Maidan Wardak province in Afghanistan.

The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education. Mohammad Reza’s village was being attacked every year by the Taliban and Kochi people. As a result, his father became one of the local armies to protect local people, houses, schools, clinics and agricultural lands from the Taliban.

In July 2014, Mohammad Reza and his younger brother Mohammad Hamed, were playing in front of the house of their father’s friend Enayatullah, when they heard gunshots.

“I got frightened and started crying because the sound of gunshots was coming from our home. Without saying anything, Enayatullah took his family, me and my brother and escaped to the mountain. It was the worst tragedy in my and my 11 years old brother’s early life.”

Later on, Mohammad Reza heard from his father’s friend Enayatullah, that the Taliban had killed his parents and they found Mohammad Reza’s National Identity card and photos. So, the Taliban started looking for Mohammad Reza to kill him as well.

Escaped

Enayatullah decided to rescue Mohammad Reza’s life and send him to a safe country. He arranged for a people smuggler and put Mohammad Reza into a car in which a woman and her 3 kids were also going to Kabul.

“My father’s friend Enayatullah, told that woman to call me her son if anyone asked her along the way. Then the driver covered me with a blanket and told me to sleep during the way.”

As an elder brother, Mohammad Reza could not take care of his younger brother. His brother was only 11 years old and he promised to help his brother and call him to a safe country one day.

His Journey to Indonesia

After arriving in Kabul, he flew to New Delhi, India in July 2014 and stayed there for almost 2 weeks. Then he flew to Malaysia where he stayed for 6 days. Finally, he arrived in Indonesia by boat on August 17, 2014.

Life in Limbo

On August 21, 2014, he registered himself at the UNHCR office in Jakarta. Due to not having the right to work, he made his way to Pekanbaru Immigration Centre to ask for assistance, and on December 17, 2014 he was transferred to Pontianak Detention Centre. While living in the detention center, Mohammad Reza kept his hopes up. He started learning the English and Bahasa (Indonesian) languages. Also, he attended psychology classes and kept exercising there.

“To stay positive and healthy, I am good at all of these activities and have many certificates. I also started volunteering in teaching my fellow refugees.”

On March 6, 2018 he got his freedom and was transferred to a community house in Tanjung Pinang.

His Only Brother

Since the Taliban have taken over Afghanistan in August 2021, Mohammad Reza has become more worried for his only brother who is left in there.

“My father’s friend got killed by the Taliban recently, and my younger brother has fled to Iran to save his life. He is at risk of being deport back to Afghanistan anytime which means he will not be able to survive in Afghanistan.
