After Hikmat Azimi’s partner was captured and killed by the Taliban, he was no longer safe in his country because the Taliban was looking for him as well. So, he fled to Indonesia by boat in June 2014.

Instead of getting depressed because of being deprived of his basic rights, Hikmat always tries to keep himself motivated and busy in exercise. He hopes now to find five Canadian friends to come to Canada where he can live peacefully and support his family.

The Hidden Business

Hikmat Azimi was born on July 14, 1994 in a village of the Jaghori district in Ghazni province in Afghanistan.

He had an electrical shop with his partner who was his uncle’s son-in-law as well. His partner used to sell wine hiddenly from Hikmat. The people of the village reported to the Taliban about it, and the Taliban sent them a threatening letter which was not taken seriously by Hikmat and his partner.

Captured

After some time, Hikmat and his partner went to Ghazni for bringing goods for their shop. His partner went back to Jaghori, and Hikmat stayed in Ghazni to bring more goods.

After a while, Hikmat’s uncle who was a driver in the way of Jaghori to Ghazni contacted him and told him not to come back to the village because his partner had been captured by the Taliban, and the Taliban was looking for him as well.

“I was so afraid and confused. The next day I heard that the Taliban had killed my partner, and his father, who had power in the village, was also looking after me because he thought I was involved in that incident.”

Leaving Home

Hikmat’s uncle suggested him to leave his home country because the Taliban and his partner’s father, both were looking for him, and he would be killed by them if he stayed there, so his uncle arranged for a people smuggler to send Hikmat to Indonesia.

His Journey to Limbo

On May 2, 2014 he flew from Kabul to New Delhi, India and stayed there for 21 days. Then, he flew to Malaysia where he stayed for 9 days. From there, he went to Indonesia by boat and arrived in Jakarta on June 4, 2014.

The Last Word

Hikmat dreams of a life in which he can get proper education and be able to work and support his family. He has been living in Bogor since he arrived in Indonesia.

“I try to keep myself motivated and busy in work out at the gym. I was only 17 when I left home, and now I am 24 years old.”

As a UNHCR refugee, Hikmat Azimi is eligible for Canada’s private sponsorship program. He needs a group of five Canadian friends to support him.
