After the Taliban attacked Hamidullah’s home and killed his father, they looked for Hamidullah, but he escaped from there and fled to Indonesia by boat in 2014.
He lived in the detention centre for about two years, and despite living in limbo, he has learned driving, tailoring and English and the Indonesian language.
His hope now is to find five Canadian friends who can bring him to Canada where he can get proper education, help others and support his family.
Hamidullah Samadi was born on April 21, 1998 in a village in the Malistan district in Ghazni province in Afghanistan.
The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education. Hamidullah’s father was a farmer, and he used to help his father on their land. Their village was near Ajaristan district that was dominated by the Taliban, and the Taliban used to attack their village.
On June 25, 2014 the Taliban came to Hamidullah’s home and abducted his father. They tortured his father and tried to force him to help them find out those people who were working with the government. Also, they tried to put more pressure on his father to join them with Hamidullah.
“We were so worried, and after a week, my father came back home and told us what had happened. He refused to join the Taliban and decided with us to move to the city of Ghazni for our safety.”
Before they migrated, on July 10, 2014 the Taliban attacked their home and killed Hamidullah’s father. Luckily, Hamidullah escaped to his uncle’s home.
After he told his uncle about it, his uncle got worried about losing him as well and he arranged for a people smuggler to send Hamidullah to a safe country.
“It is so hard to leave everything behind and escape to another country.”
Hamidullah stayed one night at his uncle's home, and early in the morning, he went to Kabul. After staying there for 4 days, he flew to New Delhi, India on July 14, 2014. From there, he flew to Malaysia, and finally, he arrived in Indonesia by boat on July 29, 2014.
On July 30, 2014, he registered himself to the UNHCR office and then, stayed in Bogor for three days. From there, he went to Tanjung Pinang Detention Centre and asked them for assistance. He remained in the detention centre for 22 months where he was interviewed and recognized as a refugee by the UNHCR.
In January 2016, he was transferred to a shelter, then he received his freedom and was transferred to a community house in Makassar in June 2016.
“I've been trying to spend my time wisely, so I've learned the English language, driving, tailoring, and I can speak the Indonesian language fluently.”
Hamidullah is very worried about his family in Afghanistan. His mother is suffering from kidney disease and his younger brother has an ear infection. They both can’t do treatment due to not having any financial supporter.
As UNHCR a refugee, Hamidullah is eligible for Canada’s private sponsorship program. He needs a group of five Canadian friends to support him.
“I need kind people to sponsor me to Canada. That would be life-changing for me and my family.”
