Eid Mohammad witnessed many terrorist attacks on the Hazara people and he was lucky not to become a victim of those attacks. After he sensed danger and knew that he would become a victim of terrorist attacks if he stayed there, he fled to Indonesia by boat in 2013.
While living in Limbo, he has been playing football and studying the English language. His hope now is to find Canadian friends who can bring him to Canada where he can follow his dream of becoming a professional football player.
Eid Muhammad was born on December 12, 1989 in Mari Abad, Quetta, Pakistan.
The Hazara people in Pakistan have been targets of persecution and massacres due to their religious and political beliefs.
In 2006, he started working as a shoemaker at a Hazara shop on Prince Road, Quetta. While working there, he and other Hazaras received threat letters from Lashkar-e-Jhangvi telling them to quit working there or be ready to die. As the number of attacks on Hazara people was being increased in the Bazaar of Quetta, Eid Muhammad left working there in 2009. He started working with his father as an electric mechanic, and in mid-2010, his father passed away.
“My father was the man of our family and losing him was the most tragic loss in my life.”
After his father’s death, he started driving an auto-rickshaw to support his family in 2011. Afterward, he saw many terrorist attacks and massive blasts in which hundreds of Hazara innocents got killed, and luckily, Eid Muhammad wasn’t among those victims.
“I knew that I would be killed in the terrorist attacks if I didn’t flee from there, so I decided to go to a safe country where I could work and support my family.”
Eid Muhammad’s family arranged for a people smuggler and on August 31, 2013 he went to Karachi from there to Islamabad and from there, he flew to Bangkok, Thailand on September 18, and stayed there for 8 days. Then he flew to Malaysia where he stayed for 12 days. Finally, he arrived in Indonesia by boat and then arrived in Jakarta on October 12, 2013.
On October 22, 2013 he registered himself at the UNHCR office and started living in Bogor. He was recognized as a refugee on April 1, 2015. Since then, he is stuck in limbo without his basic rights.
“I was so glad and hopeful about my future at that time that I was recognized as a refugee, but I didn’t know I would be stuck here for an uncertain time.”
In 2017, Eid Mohammad moved to Tebet, Jakarta and started studying the English language at HELP Learning Centre. He has been financially supported by one of his best friends, Nematullah, who is living in Australia since 2010, and they both are childhood friends.
Eid Mohammad always dreamed to be a well-known football player since his childhood but the situation and lack of support did not allow him to achieve his goal. Now, he is stuck in limbo and hopeful for his life that one day he will be living in a safe place with peace and dignity.
As a UNHCR refugee, Eid Mohammad is eligible for Canada’s private sponsorship program. He needs a group of five Canadian friends to support him.
