Amanullah was attacked by the Taliban and after surviving, he fled to Indonesia by boat in 2014.
In Indonesia, he has been practicing Muay Thai, Boxing and MMA, but unfortunately, he cannot participate in any competition as a refugee. He is very passionate and hopes to find a group of friends who can sponsor him to Canada where he can pursue his dreams and become a professional athlete one day.
Amanullah Rezaie was born in January 1998, in a village of the Jaghori district in Ghazni province in Afghanistan.
The Hazara people of the region have long been targets of persecution and massacres because of their culture, religion, and love for education. Amanullah’s father had an electronic store at which he used to sell TV, satellite dishes, antenna and other electric items. Besides going to school and doing sports, Amanullah was also helping his father at his shop.
In July 2014, his father died, and Amanullah became the only supporter of his family.
On September 13, 2014, Amanullah went to his customer’s home to receive the money for some electric items he had sold to him. His customer was a Pashtun man. When he reached there, his customer was looking very terrified.
“He told me that the Taliban had been looking for me, because according to the Taliban’s rule, it was a major sin to sell TV and satellite dishes etc. He also told me to escape from there immediately to save my life. I was very afraid.”
While being on his way back to his village, Amanullah noticed 2 cars that were chasing him. After he sped up his car, the Taliban started shooting at him from those 2 cars. Luckily, he was not shot and he escaped.
After his mother came to know about what had happened to him, she decided to send him to a safe country. Amanullah went to Kabul and arranged for a people smuggler.
On September 23, 2014, he went to New Delhi, India by plane where he stayed for 3 days. Then he flew to Malaysia and stayed there for 2 days. On September 29, 2014, he arrived in Indonesia by boat.
After arriving in Jakarta, Amanullah registered himself at the UNHCR office. Since he did not have the right to work or way to support himself in Indonesia, he went to Kalideres Immigration Centre to ask for assistance. After living at the side of the road in front of the immigration centre for about 1 year, Amanullah was transferred to a community house in Jakarta in 2018.
Amanullah has been practicing Boxing, Muay Thai and MMA. He is a very good athlete.
“Unfortunately, I cannot participate in any competition because of being a refugee. My dreams and passion are going away and I still hope to be helped by some friends to live my life again in Canada.”
