Hello Grade 2,

Have you been admiring the apple blossoms? I'm still enjoying watching the hummingbirds. It seems this spring there are so many birds enjoying the trees and blossoms. I'm also wondering about your doodles. Have you created some characters? Have you written some stories about them? I hope so, it takes a lot of practice and revising, but I know you are up for it.

I have included the remainder of the Mo Willems lunch doodles, maybe over the summer you will watch a few videos. I think it is neat to learn the behind the scenes information about writing and publishing books. I have also included a book called Birds, by Kevin Henkes. I like the colors in the illustrations. It might give you some ideas for your own illustrations.

This summer you could also keep a journal, try to do a little writing each day. Maybe your journal will be your doodles and some stories about them! It is also important to read over the summer. You could visit the library, it is opening on June 8th!

Have a great summer grade 2,

Ms. Leslie

Parents,

Please look for library books that your child may have taken home and remember to return them. This is the last post for home learning. Have a great summer!

Hello Grade 2,

I hope you enjoyed writing the words to the picture book, Tuesday. I love reading and looking at the illustrations from David Weisner's books. This week I have been listening to and watching the humming birds in my apple trees. Did you know that as well as making humming sounds with their wings, they also make little squeaking sounds? I was sitting under my apple tree watching the humming birds and that is when I discovered it. I wasn't sure what the sound was at first. Try sitting still and listening to the sounds of the birds at your house.

I have included a read aloud of a book called, The Apple Pie Tree. I love this story, maybe because I love apple blossoms, eating apples and making apple pie! If you have an apple tree in your yard you can watch the blossoms turn to apples just like in the story. If you don't have an apple tree, just look around when you are going places. Grand Manan looks so beautiful with all the trees in bloom. I have also included a picture of my apple tree from my yard. It is very large and old. It looks like this year I will be picking lots of apples! Right now it is full of all kinds of bumble bees and birds.

This week Mo Willems shows us some other characters he likes to draw. I like learning about the illustration process and the different steps that it includes. I know that we have the story, Leonardo the Terrible Monster at our library. I like how he talks about reading the pictures. You did that last week when there were very few words in the story,Tuesday.

I hope that you write some stories of your own this week, and draw some of your own characters. Book making is fun, and something that everyone enjoys reading. Have a great week reading, writing and doodling. Take in the beautiful blossoms this spring and enjoy the warm weather.

Hello Grade 2,

I hope you enjoyed writing letters last week! I know that your friends or family enjoyed receiving them. This week I have been doing lots of reading and gardening. My seeds finally sprouted! I think they needed the nice warm weather we have been having lately. Soon I will be enjoying fresh spinach, arugula, kale and lettuce, these are some of my favorite veggies.

This week I have also been reading books from one of my favorite genres. They are wordless picture books. I remember when I was your age I loved to look at pictures and paintings and then make stories up to go with them. Since those days I have discovered the author David Weisner. He writes mainly books without words! He is an artist and the story is in the pictures. I wish I could show you some of his books in person. Maybe when the library opens up you will find some of his books. I have included a video of his famous story, that was awarded the Caldecott Medal, Tuesday.

This week see if you can write the words to this story. It is a mystery, look for clues and use interesting words. Make the story sound exciting to capture the readers attention. If you have a brother or sister at home with you, they could help write the story. It is fun to write with others and share ideas.

In the Mo Willems lunch doodles I liked learning about the illustration process. It is very interesting to see how books are created and the details and drafts that happen for each picture and page in the book. Authors spend a lot of time reading and revising their work. It is exciting to see behind the scenes to some of the books we enjoyed reading together this year.

Grade 2, enjoy reading, writing and doodling!

Have a great week,

Ms. Leslie

Hello Grade 2,

I have enjoyed writing to you each week. This week I have also been writing letters to some of my friends. I have had the same pen pal for many years, actually for over twenty years! I still enjoy going to the post office and receiving letters, as I'm sure most people do. With technology and phones, email and all kinds of ways to communicate (even this web page) we sometimes might forget that getting a hand written letter is a great surprise.

I hope this week you can write a letter to a friend or relative and put it in the mail. You could even include one of your doodles with your letter. Maybe you will continue to write letters to that person and then you will also have a pen pal!

In Episode 6 of Lunch Doodles you will meet Mo Willems dog. I have included a couple of stories this week about dogs, one about the Pigeon, and another story about a dog that includes letter writing titled, Can I Be Your Dog? I wonder how many of you have a dog? My dog's name is Pal, and he is definitely a great pal!

Enjoy doodling, listening to stories and writing letters this week. Remember to read each day, have fun with your family and play outside.

I miss you all,

Ms. Leslie

Hello Grade 2,

This week I have been doing lots of reading and some story telling! I have been enjoying looking at some family photo albums. I wonder if you ever do that? It is fun to look at pictures of your family and have someone tell you about that time. This brings back many memories for me. You could take some pictures now and write about this time and all of the things that you enjoy doing with your family at home. It will be fun to look back and have those memories in the future! I encourage you to make a photo album and add a paragraph to each picture. If you want you could draw a picture instead, then write about it!

Did you enjoy the Mo Willems stories? I know you must have enjoyed his Lunch Doodles. You can work away at your own pace, I hope you have watched and doodled along with him! I have added a few more videos for you to watch. I know you will enjoy drawing Elephant and Piggie. Episode 4 reminds me of th

Grade 2, have fun doodling, journal writing, creating and story writing this week. Remember to read each day, look for interesting words and talk about the story with someone at home. Go outside and look for signs of spring and enjoy the sounds in nature.

I miss you all,

Ms. Leslie

Parents,

I hope things are going well, and that you are able to try some literacy activities at home. That might mean having a conversation about the things you are doing together, reading a book, finding interesting words, or playing games. Literacy is all around us, with your child you could look for word patterns, rhyming words, or print in our environment (example road signs). Recipes are great for understanding procedures, after following directions you could ask, what did you do first, next, etc...

These are just some ideas of things to look for and do, many of which I'm sure you already do on a daily basis. I hope that you find these suggestions helpful, if you would like to offer some feedback as to how things are going and what your child is enjoying for literacy activities, please email me. As well if you need the login and password for your child to use raz kids please email me: rosalind.leslie@nbed.nb.ca

This program checks for understanding with comprehension questions for students to answer after they read the story. Please do not feel that you have to use this program, it is optional, but it will give you access to some different reading material if needed.

Take care,

Ms. Leslie

Hello Grade 2,

I hope that you are all getting outside to play and enjoying the sunny spring days! Did you make a list of the things you are wondering about? I wonder if you checked out the Wonderopolis website? Remember that I have been doing some gardening? Some of my seeds have sprouted, and others I'm anxiously still waiting for. I wonder how many more days it will take for the tomatoes to sprout? Did you know that it only takes a few days for romaine lettuce and bok choy to sprout? I wonder if some of my students are gardening?

Lately I have also been enjoying reading a new series. I love to find a series of books, that way I can still read about the same characters and get to know them better. I know that grade two loves to a great read book series as well. Remember Elephant and Piggie? They are some of the funniest characters I have met! Remember when Piggie tries to play the trumpet? Let's not forget about Pigeon, he is hilarious!

These books are written by the author Mo Willems. He has great character ideas and drawings. I discovered a Lunch Doodle class he has on the internet. I have attached the website, for you so that you can get some ideas about story writing and doodling! Sounds like fun and you also get to meet the author of the books we have been enjoying this year. Your parents might want to check out this link below:

https://kennedy-center.org/education/mo-willems

I have attached the first and second video, since I was late to discover these. I believe this week is the final new Lunch Doodle, but you can start from the beginning by checking out the link above.

Have fun doodling and writing grade two, I miss you all.

Take care,

Ms. Leslie

Hello Grade 2,

I hope that you are all enjoying the sunny spring days. Did you make a list of the signs of spring happening in your yard? This week I have been getting some soil ready for planting. Usually I have a flower garden, but this year I'm going to make a vegetable garden. I'm quite excited about having fresh veggies this summer. Getting a garden ready has me asking a lot of questions:

I wonder how I will keep the deer from eating my vegetables?

I wonder how much fertilizer I should spread out through the soil?

I wonder how much luck I will have growing my favorite herbs?

I wonder if I will be able to collect seeds from my veggies and try to use them next year?

I wonder if my students are helping to garden at their house?

To answer some of my questions I read books, check out gardening websites, and ask other gardening friends and neighbors. Some things I might have to wait and find out by watching and tending my garden. It's my backyard experiment! I attached a picture of the seeds I started. I put them in a nice sunny spot. I wonder how many days it will take for them to sprout?

This week write down what you are wondering about, once you start it's hard to stop! I have attached a website called Wonderopolis, you can check out different wonders each day. There are also questions that other students have. Maybe you can do some research or have some conversations and discussions at home about different things you wonder about, click the link below.

https://wonderopolis.org/wonders?grade=2

Click the play button at the top of this page to listen to the story, Not a Box.

I wonder what you can make out of a box? Sketch some ideas after watching and listening to this story. I hope you enjoy it!

Hello Grade 2,

I hope that you are enjoying reading and writing at home. I have been digging out old books and things that I enjoy reading. I hope that you are doing the same thing. I actually just read a book that I had read a few years ago. Sometimes it is fun to re-read books and re-visit characters. Maybe you can read one of your favorite books from home to someone in your family this week. You could tell them what you like about it and have a book talk. Discuss the characters, the setting and what might happen next. Can you write another chapter or more to the story?

Something else that I have been enjoying is the spring weather and all of the changes that I have been noticing in my yard. So this week I would like you to go outside and write a list titled, Signs of Spring. For example, my apple tree has buds on it. I can't wait to enjoy the apple blossoms next month.

My dog Pal especially likes spring. He loves to chase the birds that have been migrating from the south. Yesterday he jumped in a pond trying to reach two ducks. He did this right after I gave him a nice bath! These are all ideas that I could use to write a story. If you want you could write a story about my dog, Pal, or your own pet. I have included some pictures of Pal for you.

Here are some other writing suggestions for you to pick from. You can illustrate your stories and color the pictures. Remember to add details to your writing and your pictures.

Spring Topics for Writing (You can choose one or two)

  1. A baby bunny has appeared in a basket on your doorstep. You soon discover it has one special, magical ability. Write a story about this bunny.

  2. What is the difference between spring and summer? List as many differences as you can.

  3. Spring is thought to be a time of new beginnings. Write about a time when you started something new.

  4. Would you rather spend a spring day hiking in the woods or planting a garden? Why?

  5. Write about the perfect spring day. Include details about the weather, where you would go, and what you would do.

Hello Grade 2,

I miss you all! I have some ideas for you to do while you are at home. It is important to read, write and listen to someone read or listen to a story in the learning links page in Extras in the drop down menu. Talking about the story, discussing your favorite part, or favorite character and making predictions (what you think will happen next) are all important parts of reading. Sharing the information you learn, or asking questions about a non-fiction book is also interesting to talk about.

Grade 2 students can login to raz kids by going to the learning links page in Extras in the drop down menu if you need books to read.

Keeping a journal is one way to write each day. You could write about your day or things that interest you. Draw a picture and write about it. Remember to add details to describe or explain the topic you are writing about. Writing stories is another great way to write, then you can read your story to someone in your family. Don't forget to add details to your pictures too!

Have a good week and enjoy reading, writing and talking about books with your family.

Take care,

Ms. Leslie
