Mrs. K's Literacy

June Plan Parents.docx

Welcome!

Hello Parents & Students,

Mental health is #1 during this pandemic and it is important to know you and your child's limits. This website has been created to use as a resource. Grade K-5 teachers have been working hard to try to reach as many homes as possible. If you can't find what you need search the other teachers pages!

Here is a quick link to Mrs. K's online reading website!

Outcomes & Expectations...

I am sure you are wondering “What does my child need to know by the end of Grade One?”. Try not to dwell on that question because you might set yourself up for failure.

Remember to do what you can, when you can, and when in doubt have your child read to you. No books? You always have access to EPIC! This has thousands of books and quizzes, sorted at appropriate reading levels.

If you have questions regarding your child's reading status please message me or call :)

Reading

Ask your children how I feel about the English language. They will tell you…I do not like it! What letter makes what sound? More than one letter together makes more sounds, silent letters, blends, and a Y that sounds like I? Not my idea, and my students know it 😉!

Grade One sight words- I introduced five every week and children memorized them. Feel free to see which ones your child has memorized and then practice them at home.

*** If you have a student who is weaker do not expect them to read these to you. I would recommend you check out Mrs. GG & Mrs. Green’s Kindergarten sight word document. Once those have been mastered introduce Grade One words. Every child learns differently.

Mastering sight words: Idea #1- Flash Cards

Write sight words on pieces of paper and flash them at your child. Make sure not to introduce too many at once. Mix it up and put all the flash cards in a hat or bowl and have them pull one out at a time.

Mastering sight words: Idea #2- Word Wall

I made a word wall in my window. It isn’t pretty but it works. Under each letter we will add a sight word that we have learned. You may want to just put them all on the word wall so that your child can see it for writing practice.

Comprehension

I am adding a reading journal handout. We do this in the classroom and call it “Read to self & Response Journal”. The students have an assigned duotang for completed response journal handouts. Each time they read silently to themselves they must complete a response journal. This helps me assess whether they understood the book. Note: This is something that they can do independently up to 20-30 mins (giving you a mini break).

  • Step 1: Name and Date

  • Step 2: Draw a picture of something that happened in the book or your favorite part.

  • Step 3: Color the emoji that describes how you feel about the book.

  • Step 4: Conference with mom, dad or an older sibling.

Writing

We had a wide range of writing abilities in our class. If you get time to ask your child to write, even if its on a sticky note, try to encourage the following things:

  • 1. Capitals at the beginning of a sentence.

  • 2. Finger spaces.

  • 3. Punctuation at the end of a sentence. !?.

  • 4. Special names, persons, places, thing, dates etc. should be capitalized.

  • 5. Use the word wall (sight words) to assist in you writing piece.

***This is a Grade One guideline. Please remember some students may need to start with just one sentence while using the Kindergarten sight words.

Writing prompts: Week 8: June 8-12

o Prompt # 1: Do you like the beach or the pool better? Why do you like one better than the other? What are some differences?

§ Draw a picture with a pencil and color neatly. Please check for punctuation (! ? .), capitals in the correct spots, and finger spaces.

o Prompt # 2: What do you know about sea creatures that have shells? Why do you think they have shells? Do you have a favorite?

§ Draw a picture with a pencil and color neatly. Please check for punctuation (! ? .), capitals in the correct spots, and finger spaces.

Spelling

I have decided to add a weekly spelling test. This is a resource, nothing needs to be submitted, there will be no assessment on my end. It can be a part of your weekly plans or not at all. See below...

Week # 8 "nk"

  • Introduce the sound on Monday and have children practice their spelling through the week. Test on Fridays or whatever works for you!

*We use these videos when introducing new sounds each week. The kids will be familiar if you want to show them.

Printing Practice

Workbooks:

It is frustrating to write if you are not a neat printer. I have purchased Canadian Workbooks that are wonderful! There are several different kinds of workbooks out there that would be equally as valuable.

Printables:

I am adding some practice pages for those of you who have a printer. This is something you can do daily with children at any level K-2. See below...
