There are plenty of machines and tools that are used for fabrication. Keep scrolling to learn about them. Make sure to learn how to use all of the tools safely with the safety pages!
These are some of the most frequently used machines in the shop. The vertical band saw (top left) is used for cutting materials. The drill press (right) is used for putting holes into different materials. The sander (bottom left) is for smoothing out edges and rough spots, as well as evening-out bumps.
The dremel (top left), the hand drill (bottom left), and the jigsaw (right) are also commonly used in robotics. The dremel is a tool that rotates at high speeds in order to grind, sand, cut, or carve. The next tool, the hand drill, is similar to the drill press mentioned above as it's also used to drill holes. Finally, the jigsaw is used for cutting into materials, similar to the band saw.
We also use lots of basic tools that you should be familiar with. These may include: screwdrivers, scissors, hammers, wrenches, rulers, and clamps.
These next ones are less known. The metal file is used for smoothing/ sanding. The hack saw is just a manual saw. The Allen/hex key is like a screwdriver but with a hexagonal shape that goes inside a hexagonal socket. The nut driver is also like a screwdriver but with a hexagonal shape; however, this one goes fits outside the nut. The center punch/ awl is used along with a hammer to create a small dent to mark where to drill. Lastly, the rachet is used to loosen or tighten nuts and bolts, but more efficiently than a wrench or nut driver.
