We woke up to the gentle sound of waves and the distant ringing bell of the harbour buoy. It was truly a beautiful sunny day with a gentle breeze blowing off the sea to keep everything cool. We decided to return to the MAR-E-SOL where Brian welcomed us for a great breakfast before embarking on the long trip to Augrabies National Park. We did manage to go through Springbok but decided not to sleep over.
We drove for over 250km through flat country with mountains lining the horizon. The plains were dotted with “Basket of Eggs” (Drumlins) that were created during the glacier age when the area was covered by glacier. The stretch of the road between Poffadder and Kakamos is an official section for speed testing of vehicles however I do not think a Defender can perform well in this area so we chugged along at 110km/hr.
We arrived to a sweltering Augrabies (42oC in the shade) and headed directly to the restaurant for a cold beer. I think the beer in my portable fridge is colder – I will test this when we take a drive for an evening sun-downer at the look-out point in the park.
