We drove all the way to Moremi National Park, North Gate, via the two track road in the Chobe National Park.
The 280km distance took us 7 hours. We saw a number of elephant, various buck and zebra. At one point a huge male elephant stepped out from behind a tree into the track about 50 metres in front of us. As the bush is so dense, we did not see him and if we had been travelling any faster, we would have hit him. Just before reaching Moremi North Gate, we had to cross athe Khwai river. Lynne’s alarm bells starting ringing and she was ready to take a long trip to Maun. Normally, the passenger gets out of the vehicle to walk across the river to confirm the best route. In this case the driver, Philip, had to walk through the river to check the best path to take. Lynne had no problem with Philip walking through the river knowing that there are hippo and crocodiles in the river. The river crossing was not as bad as it looked.
There was only one other vehicle at the campsite with two young men from the Orange Free State who were doing a first time camping trip to Kasane and on to Botswana. They had the bare minimum camping equipment with them – ‘Keep it simple’ philosophy is best.
