We took an easy and leisurely drive to Swakopmund. 100km before Swakopmund, we entered the desert once again. Our expectation of Swakopmund started dwindling with each kilometre we drove.
We arrived and were pleasantly surprised to see a beautiful town that was very developed with all the shopping opportunity that Lynne could imagine. It is “the” holiday destination for anyone living within 600km of the town.
We enquired about sky-diving, and Philip booked a 14h00 sky dive with Ground Rush Adventures for Thursday.
Tonight Lynne must have crayfish. We drove around town and found the equivalent of Pier Chic (Dubai) called Jetty 1905 but better and a lot cheaper. It was a great dinner. Philip had salmon.
Today is laundry, blog update and sky-dive day. We also decided to spend 3 nights at Swakopmund as we like the place so much. We found a nice little coffee shop in town called Pandora’s Box and prepared the blog. We met a couple who were travelling in a camper but were staying at Backpackers. We told them about the 5 star camping facilities at Alte Brucke Resort (Swakop River Resort) – Guess we will see them later today.
Well, the big jump happened and Philip survived the 220km/h fall, the tight spiral turns and the landing. It was absolutely awesome. The free fall and 360’s were the best but it had to come to an end as the ground was approaching very fast. Sky diving is 100 times more exciting than bungie jumping.
After the jump, we went to the Tiger Reef Beach Bar which is on the beach for a beer to update out notes for the blog. A dead dolphin had washed up on the beach and two others were floating offshore.
Mike Ilsley advised that we should try the Pizzeria Restaurant. As we enjoy a good pizza, we decided this was a great idea. We were not disappointed even though it only seats about 25 people with a squeeze. We judged this to be the best pizza in all of South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Namibia.
Thank you to everyone who gave us gifts prior to our departure on 20th December and on Christmas day (books, rusks, biscuits, wine, cheese, preserves, advice, etc.). We were worried as to where to store the gifts so we packed every spare opening until we could fit everything in. The gifts have been terrific on our travels. We have used just about everything which has provided a bit more space in the vehicle.
Today was a very relaxing day. We went to Walvis Bay for coffee and watched the paragliders taking off from the dunes. Walvis Bay is not as bad as many people say but it is not great like Swakopmund.
Philip sat at Pandora’s Box with a pot of tea and updated the blog material while Lynne went shopping for the next part of the journey through Namibia.
We returned to Tiger Reef Beach Bar for a sun-downer before returning to camp for dinner.
