This is our first trip to Etosha. We got to the South camp of Okaukuejo at 12h00 and decided that there was plenty of time to do the slow game drive through to the Nomutoni Camp Site on the eastern border. As we got closer to the camp site, we noticed the thunder clouds grouping into bigger thunder clouds. We saw very little game. We saw a single large male lion and a group of 3 lion (1 male and 2 female) having a groupie. The females were on heat and the male was doing his diligence in executing his responsibilities. We saw large flocks of flamingos but they were too far to appreciate.
The Etosha pan is too large to comprehend. Imagine looking out at sea and all you can see is blue water wherever you look. Except for blue water, imagine seeing only white sand. Although there were patches of water, it was mostly dry.
We had barely arrived Nomutoni Camp Site when the thunder storm arrived. There was no point in setting up camp so we took a drive around one of the smaller sub-pans. As it was raining and had rained in the past couple of days, the roads were very wet and slippery with large pools of water which had to be navigated. We were fortunate to get close to a smaller group of flamingos and spoonbills.
An hour later, we got back to the camp and the thunderstorm had moved on. We visited Fort Nomutoni where 7 Germans fought off 500 warriors in the late 1800’s and later escaped under the cover of darkness without any loss of German life.
We had dinner at the Nomutoni restaurant in the fort – Not highly recommended.
