We woke up this morning to no electricity which was probably due to the thunderstorm and continuous rain all night so Philip had to haul out the gas stove to make our breakfast as we were in a self-catering chalet.
We left Hole in the wall at 08h30 and although the road was nowhere near as bad as yesterday, there were a few stretches of gravel road that were a bit of a challenge! We decided that we would rather have a good gravel road than a bad tar road where some of the potholes are big enough to swallow George or at the very least, cause a tyre blow out!
We arrived in Butterworth just before 11h00 and sat in a traffic jam for over an hour. We were convinced that there must, at the very least, have been an accident, but were rather irritated to finally discover that it was no more than the traffic lights at an extremely busy intersection, that were not working!
We arrived in an extremely misty and very wet Hogsback at 15h30. Philip’s parents built a holiday home in Hogsback which they named “Petersfield”, (painting attached) around 40 years ago. It is also the first place that Philip took me away to over 30 years ago for an Easter weekend with him, his parents, brother and sister, so it holds special memories for both of us.
We drove through Keiskammahoek to see the state of the community clinic and church that a relative of Philip’s used to run over 35 years ago. Sadly, the clinic is in ruins, but the church, although in a state of disrepair, is still being used.
The last 10km into Hogsback took us through some thick lush indigenous forest. (See the attached video).
We enjoyed a delicious dinner next to a roaring fire (it is cold and wet up here) and then retired back to our very nice hotel room.
We stayed in a lovely cottage at Arminel Lodge (See attached photo) called Periwinkle Cottage.
