It was a beautiful day when we left Arminel Lodge in Hogsback this morning. After several days of cold, wet and windy weather, the warm sunshine and blue sky was very welcome. We drove to Petersfield to see the house that my father built before heading for Zuurberg (Translated: Sour Mountain). As we drove away, one dog, barking furiously, started to chase George and was promptly joined by 4 or 5 others from around the neighbourhood. What a dog would do if it actually caught a vehicle is something that has always mystified me... Anyway, they made such a noise barking, that Lynne stuck her head out the window and barked back – that really confused them…Who was this other “female dog” in their territory?
As we have had no internet connectivity for the last couple of days, we stopped off in Grahamstown for coffee and an opportunity to update the daily blog.
We arrived at Zuurberg at 13h15 and managed to check in and unpack. Shortly after our arrival, Philip’s parents, brother, and sister with their respective family’s arrived.
Once we had all said our “hi’s and hello’s” we had a very welcome cup of tea and some of Lynne’s Christmas cake. The energetic took themselves off for a 4.4km walk into the forested valley near the hotel and the rest of us caught up with email, chatted or read a book.
Christmas morning dawned with a few clouds around and lovely warm sunshine. Christmas lunch was a feast fit for a king – and then some! Philip and Sean (our brother-in-law pictured looking out over the beautiful Zuurberg Mountains below) decided that after overdosing on Christmas lunch, they needed to walk off the lunch and left to do a 12.1km hike. During the last hour of the hike the heavens opened. The thunder was deafening and the lightening rather scary. Being out on an exposed mountain, with no cover, in this weather is NOT the ideal situation! The rain however, was very welcome and helped to cool them down. They made their way slowly back to the hotel, as the going had become very slippery, and enjoyed a well earned hot shower and sundowner.
Before departing for Port Elizabeth, we had a family photo shoot.
On Monday morning, we drove through to Port Elizabeth, booked into our rather nice guest house, Aqua Marine and went off to have lunch at the Elephant Walk with Philip’s sister and family.
This morning and early afternoon, the weather was partly cloudy but once again, the heavens have opened and we are in the middle of another terrific storm.
