Both of us walked over a bridge and up a little hill to visit Diaz Point where Bartolomeu Diaz erected a cross in 1488 (Why? No idea!). A colony of seals lives on the island near the cross. We then headed for Sossusvlei.
The drive to Sossusvlei was easy going on good gravel roads. There are many cattle farms in the area that also allow Gemsbok (Oryx) and Springbok to live alongside the cattle.
We setup camp and the wind decided we needed some sand blasting. My goodness, there was sand in almost every crevice – Lynne ended up walking around with a pink shower cap on to cover her hair and ears – bizarre to say the least! There we no ground squirrels or birds flocking to meet and greet us (or beg a crumb or two) like most other camp sites, much to Lynne’s disappointment.
We ended making dinner in the camp site washing area as this was the only area with the least sand blowing through. Lynne also experimented by making her first roosterkoek (roasted bread). It turned out okay, but next time we will do better. By the time we finished dinner, the wind had died down so we took a stroll through the camp. It was getting dark and we saw 3 owls sitting in a tree. We watched them for a while before heading back to our camp site for the night.
