How To Perform Roof Repair

If you have ever thought of doing a roof repair, please read this article. You can rest assured that it only takes a little experience and a few tools and an average house can be created with ease.

Learning how to perform a roof repair on an asphalt or metal roof requires only a few common tools and a pair of flat-soled shoes. The flat soles do less damage after walking on the roof than those with heels. Before climbing onto the roof, make sure it is safe to walk on. If you have rotten wood due to a leaky roof, it's possible for a rotten board or beam to snap when you put your weight on it. Even if you find that the damage is extensive, you should consider a full replacement as it would be cheaper to replace than repair at that point. To know more here about this article.

Learning how to repair an asphalt roof requires a few tools that you probably already have. The shingles are removed with a shovel, the roof nails with a hammer and bent shingles can be glued and fixed with roofing putty. When replacing a broken or damaged shingle, remove the row of shingles above it so you can access the damaged shingle. One tip is to use the putty to glue a torn shingle to the roof and secure it with a roof nail. Completely damaged shingles must be replaced. Try to use the same holes that the old shingle used when you installed the new shingle in its place.

Learning how to repair a metal roof isn't that easy. You need to determine what type of metal your roof is made of. Once you've done this, you'll need to get yourself a patch made of the same metal. The surface of the metal roof must be cleaned before starting the repair. You'll need roofing putty, wire brushes, pliers, sandpaper, solder, soldering guns, flux, tin snips, and gloves to handle sharp metal edges.

After you find the damaged area that you want to repair, you need to cut a piece of new metal two inches larger than the area to be repaired. Then cut off the corners of this new patch with the tin snips. Bend under the outside edges of the new metal. Fold it under half an inch. Sand the folded parts and make them shiny. Now use the flux on the shiny areas of your new patch and the damaged area.

Now place the new patch over the damaged area and hold it in place with a weight, perhaps a brick or block. Use the soldering and soldering gun and go along the edges of the new patch and seal the new patch to the roof. The solder needs to melt and fill in the gaps between the new patch and the damaged roof.

Go all the way around the new patch until you're done. Now cut another patch larger than the damaged area. Coat the entire area of the soldered patch and press this second patch onto it. Apply another layer of cement on top. Do another patch like the last one if you want to make sure it doesn't leak. Cover everything again with roof putty or roof coating and you're done.
