Demon Slayer Season 2 Episode 1: Kyojuro Rengoku emulates his father

When I heard that Demon Slayer Season 2 would be split into two courses with the first one being a retelling of the Mugen Train Arc, I was disappointed. You feel lazy. It is also unnecessary. Why waste the first seven episodes? Sure, maybe some fans haven't seen the movie, but post the movie on streaming services if you want fans to see it. For those who don't know what a "cour" is, it is "essentially a production block of episodes that may or may not have a break between it and the next block." Anyway, the first course is called Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train Arc. The first episode is brand new and focuses on Kyojuro Rengoku hunting down a demon before boarding the Mugen train. Read more information here about this article.

The first episode adds more context for the Mugen Train Arc. Rengoku transforms into a demon that attacks people at night. In Demon Slayer most people are unaware of the existence of demons. This means that society doesn't respond to demons at all, rather people assume that people just disappear. It is suitable for plot too. If the humans avoid the demons, there may not be much conflict in the series. However, in this episode the people are aware of the demon's presence. Fuku is the exception at first. She doesn't believe that demons exist even though her grandmother does. Rengoku buys all of Fuku's bento and poses as a vendor to get closer to the Mugen train. At the maintenance station, she finally meets the demon.

Known as the "Slasher", the demon is bald and gray with a body covered in blue tattoos. When he uses his Blood Demon Art, these tattoos glow. The Slasher has sharp dark blue fingernails and moves quickly due to his Demon Art The Slasher states that he is "the fastest demon" and taunts Rengoku as he holds a child hostage. Rengoku warns him not to get too arrogant. Before Slasher can do any more damage to the boy, Rengoku dashes forward and cuts off both of the demon's hands. The Slasher runs away, while Rengoku treats the boy. Once the demon detects the scent of Fuku and his grandmother, he uses his Demon Art to chase after them.

Echoes of Shinjuro Rengoku

Leaving the boy in the care of other demon hunters, Rengoku follows Slayer using his full concentration breath. With the head start, Slasher terrifies Fuku and her grandmother before Rengoku shows up. The arrogant demon challenges Rengoku's speed. Rengoku turns out to be faster and quickly decapitates Slasher with his Flame Breathing, First Form: Unknowing Fire. Watching from behind, Fuku's grandmother remembers the time Shinjuro Rengoku saved her and Fuku's mother. She initially mistakes Rengoku for her father, as the latter has the same clothes and mannerisms as his father.

It is a moment that she reminds us that every demon is a threat to innocent people. This series of epic fights with demons can focus a lot on the action. We must remember that the Demonic Body has a noble cause and has profound effects on the lives of humans. I'm still disappointed with the retelling of the Mugen Arc, but I do appreciate the new episode. Demon Slayer Season 2 Episode 1 perfectly matches the movie already covered. Not an impressive episode, but one that adds to the arc.
