Expanding Skillset: Design: Projects: Vector Drawing

  • How are Vector graphics more useful than Pixel graphics?

  • How do I use Vector drawing tools to create effective designs?

What am I making?

  • A scalable Vector drawing using Adobe Illustrator

    • original or based on a photo or sketch

    • that presents a whole composition with a visible, understandable story

  • example Vector Drawing page you would put on your Google Site

How do I make it?

Steps

  1. Get familiar with Adobe Illustrator: Play and practice with the Video Tutorials shared above. They go from simpler to more tricky, so doing them in order makes sense.

  2. Save files along the way in your Period 1/2/5/4 folder. Your play drawings could become something you want to use for finishing this project. (File > Save)

  3. Decide on Something to Draw with Adobe Illustrator to turn in by the end of the week

    • Original composition (draw from your imagination)

    • or, Draw on paper, then create it using Illustrator

    • or, Import a Photograph or Image, and draw over it

  4. Create your Drawing

    • Use File > Save to save your progress (save files in your Period 1/2/5/4 folder)

    • Goal: A Whole Composition - something that stands on its own

    • Goal: An Understandable Story - viewer of your drawing can "get" the story behind it

  5. Turn in Google Classroom: Adobe Illustrator .ai file

  6. Turn in Google Classroom: Google Site Page link to Vector Drawing page

    • In Adobe Illustrator, Export your drawing as a PNG or JPG

    • Add a Vector Drawing page to your site (Pages tab, +)

    • Add your Adobe Illustrator export PNG or JPG (Insert tab, Image)

    • In a Text Box, write about the Story behind your drawing, and also note the most useful thing you learned doing this project.

  7. If any problems with Adobe Illustrator, use https://vectr.com as an alternative - it works the same, but has less features than Adobe Illustrator.
