Can you share with us what diversity and inclusion mean to you? Why do you think they are essential?
For me, diversity means recognizing, respecting and valueing the uniqie qualities that make each person who they are no matter their background, beliefs, experiences, characteristics or perspectives; while inclusion has to do more about creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected and able to fully participate and contribute their unique point of view. They are both essential because people can have a safe space without any fear of being judge or ostracized and be themselves but also when it comes to the workplace, both of these help foster innovation, improve problem-solving, increase employee engagement and retention and also promotes fairness and good ethical expectations.
What is the hardest part of working in a diverse environment?
Definitely dealing with people that you know have ill intentions towards you and others!
How would you describe your own "diversity mix", the cultural mix within yourself?
I do love where I come from. From my father's paternal side, I have French ancestry from my great-grandfather, Spanish ancestry from my mother's paternal side and also Afro-Antillean ancestry both from my mother's and father's maternal sides. This diversity mix can also be reflected somehow in my personality as one of my biggest dreams is to travel to many countries as possible and learn about their cultures.
How do you approach understanding the perspective of a coworker whose background differs from yours?
I am the type of person who won't judge you on anything from your personal life. My philosophy is: if you mind your own business, I mind my own and it's all good. I go to work to do my job and get paid for it.
How would you manage an incident where a coworker said sexist, racist, or prejudiced statements?
If it was directed to me, I would get angry and cry. Of course, would try to seek help from my boss or leader. However, it if wasn't directed to me specifically, I would be very judgemental and I would mentally blacklist that person, that person cannot be trusted and if I had to work alongside them well I would talk about it with my boss that I feel uncomfortable around this person.
How do you plan to enhance your understanding and knowledge of DEI?
I try to be as educated and informed as I can be since a lot of people take their time to share about their issues concerning DEI on social media, so I take my time to watch the video.
