Ranged, slash, blunt, pierce resistances give a bonus 50 armor rating per rank toward the specific type of attack.
For example, if an enemy has ranged resist rank 3, it has a bonus 150 armor rating added only calculated when being struck with a bolt or arrow.
Daggers cause piercing damage. Maces, warhammers, and staves cause blunt damage. Bows and crossbows cause ranged damage. Most other damage is slash. Some however, like unarmed, are typeless.
Several enemies have resistances against certain weapon types, such as dragons. These resistances cannot be reduced and stack multiplicatively with armor rating.
Some enemies have armor penetration. For enemies that can wield normal weapons, this amount can also be affected by what perks they have.
Enemy variants are listed in bold. Generally they are more powerful types of these enemies that have all the traits above, plus the extra ones listed.

Enemies that attack with "unarmed" attacks, meaning without a weapon that the player would be able to use, and are not humanoid do piercing, blunt, or slashing damage. The only time this matters is if your armor specifically gives you a bonus resistance to that type of damage. Enemies like dwarven centurions do unarmed damage, despite them having a "weapon." Enemies like giants only do "blunt" damage through this system when they attack with their hand, not their club (although the club DOES do blunt damage also, but it's a proper weapon and therefore not what this section covers).
